AIoT is the new abbreviation to remember

AIoT combines AI and IoT, Artificial Intelligence combined with the Internet of Things. AI is currently a huge buzzword; no article can be written without mentioning AI. The superpowers of AI can be enormous, but there are also many challenges. Just read some of the articles I shared in this newsletter to see to which aspects you must pay attention to when using AI.
IoT has been a hype some time ago, but lately, it seems to be a bit silent. With IoT, lots of tiny sensors and devices can be built. These sensors and devices have a particular goal. For instance, monitoring the temperature in the fridge or tracking the earth's surface to detect earthquakes. Many examples are already out there.
One of the challenges is that these IoT devices generate large amounts of data. Processing this data has been a cumbersome task, generating cloud services to absorb the data and to display dashboards.
One of the superpowers of AI is that AI algorithms can parse vast amounts of data. While processing this data, the AI algorithm can take actions, like updating a dashboard or comparing data against already existing data. It can even start a workflow to initiate actions when needed.
A nice example of this combination is the system Cal Fire (the Californian fire department) uses. Together with the University of San Diego, they developed a system employing over 1000 HD cameras. The goal of the system is to spot wildfires quickly. The feeds from all of these cameras are monitored by an AI model. In a year's time, they spotted 77 wildfires before a 911 came in. Meaning that the fires where relatively small, posing less risk to the firefighters and destroying less nature and buildings.
Without AI, it would be nearly impossible to keep an eye on 1000+ camera feeds around the clock. Having the combination of AI and IoT, the system delivers value very quickly.
