This ain’t no April Fool's Joke

“The trails are a mess right now…roughly a foot of new drifted snow and much more is on the way. Winds increasing with gusts up to 50 mph. We suggest you stay home…”
?
I am sure you have all heard about the record snow fall in parts of?California, Nevada,?Utah?and Colorado. 700 to 800+ inches at the summits. That’s 58 to 67?FEET?of the white stuff!!
?
These same storm systems wreaked havoc on our plans to take my wife’s cousin and her husband cross-country skiing on the?Grand Mesa, near Grand Junction during our visit there. Everything conspired against us.
?
First – new snow of 2 feet fell on the trails, the evening after they had been groomed. Great for ski touring perhaps. Terrible for classic or skate skiing.
?
Then the road was closed because of the snow – preventing the cat driver from even getting to the trailhead.
?
Then the cat needed a repair – meaning another day’s delay, upon which time an avalanche came down – blocking the access road yet again.
?
Three days later – the road opens – but the parking lot is inaccessible, the cat repair is taking another day and the volunteers working on the trails “suggested” it was foolhardy to drive up. Then it snowed again.
?
Finally, 5 days after our arrival in Grand Junction – the day dawned clear. Reports were that the road was opened and that groomer Dave was able to prepare some of the trails.
?
But…
?
The?highs?for the day would only be?-2 F. That’s -20C for my friends in Canada and everywhere else. Nordic ski competitions these days cancel competitions at -15C and colder. My wife and I have the same kind of “rule”. We’re not skiing at those temperatures.

Now imagine if running and operating these trails were a business. Your business.?
?
And you were subjected to a continued series of events, completely outside of your control. What do you do? How do you mitigate the loss of business? How do you plan for such eventualities – even those that only happen once in a decade? Once a generation?
?
If you don’t think these questions are valid for you business, think again. Negative events can always happen. They’re happening right now. Bank failures. Rising prices. Shortages of supplies.?
?
Dan Kennedy used to say something along the lines of, “Expect the best but plan for the worst.” Something he coined being “negatively optimistic’.??I hope you do likewise.
?
Until next week,?
Stay healthy and focus on profit!?
