The sessions encouraged wider discussions and allowed participants to deepen their understanding of specific areas within Indian healthcare landscape.
Panel 1 - AI Blueprint to build synergy in Startup Eco-system
Panel 2 comprising Kumara Raghavan , Geetha Manjunath , Karan M. , Suchanda M. , @Prapti Jaiswal AarogyaAI and Vaibhav Tewari tackled the topic of building AI blueprint to synergise healthcare Startup eco-system in India.
The emphasis on healthcare digitisation by Government of India along with momentum among providers towards tech modernisation, and keen interest in funding houses/ business enterprises to support growth of health tech startups; we are witnessing the creation of a nurturing ecosystem for AI modernisation in the Indian healthcare industry.
Are we ready to ride the AI wave and what will it take for the healthcare industry to deliver maximum value for its consumers? Hospitals, clinicians, payers, business enterprises, central and state governments, healthcare & AI startups will need to synergise efforts towards developing, scaling and regulating AI solutions in disease management, naturopathy, precision medicine, preventative care, mental well-being, health system modernisation, home care etc.
Health tech startups and innovation are promising but this space is heavily skewed towards point solutions. For a moment, let’s work backwards from the healthcare consumer – how many apps/interfaces we will need to have – one for Ayurveda, naturopathy, Fitbit, Neurowear etc. There is no end to these point solutions which often times complicate than ease patients’ life.
There is a clear need for integrating most point solutions so that we don’t miss the larger goal of ‘being patient or human-centric’. AI, powered by hyper-scalers has the power to integrate all silos in the background and can automate intervention – like a driverless car.
We should not spend time measuring our heart rate, sleep cycles, brain wave..every few hours and intervening as this is distracting. We need an all encompassing ‘health value map/blueprint’ that interoperates/integrates all silo point solutions into a SuperApp.
Can AI make it happen in the next decade? and if yes, how? The panel discussed the opportunities, challenges and success metrics related to AI driven healthcare.
Panel 2 - Building AI Solutions for Healthy India.
Panel 2 comprising Shalini Kapoor , Saurav Kasera , Vikram Manchanda and @Harsh Parek tackled the topic of building AI solutions to deliver a healthy India.
India is one of the biggest tech hubs of the world, and if that’s not enough, majority of India is young. These facts in itself have well positioned us to capture the trillion-dollar AI healthcare market and lead among the emerging countries. ‘Healthy India’ can be now be realised at least 10X times faster with AI solutions across the spectrum of healthcare value chain.
From early disease prediction, personalised genomic treatment to integrative care & prevention- can enable each of the 1.4 billion of us to thrive at our peak performance. And it does not stop here…as AI evolves, super humans may not be science fiction anymore! From a decade ago, India has come a long way to becoming one of the world leaders and drivers of technology led growth across all major industries.
Rising income levels across the rural & urban middle class, rapidly growing tech adoption, increased affordability & insurance coverage, higher awareness of overall wellbeing and integrative care, and focus on disease prevention- has set up the stage for AI powered healthcare. Likewise, increased direct foreign tech investments and accelerated adoption of health tech are strong indicators of rapidly transforming digital India.

The opportunities are inspiring and so are the challenges. The demand and supply gaps present opportunities of growth leveraging technology in diagnostics, home care, preventative and integrative care, assisted living, and drug development. India is also witnessing a shifting trend towards chronic diseases, rapidly changing demographics and disease profiles. Capturing these opportunities will require a significant shift in business models for the private healthcare sector and close collaboration with the government in health reforms and policy recommendations. With the private sector witnessing pressure on margins and with rising costs of manpower and utilities, this pressure is bound to increase as prices come under regulatory control. The government will need to balance the price control with appropriate incentives for private stakeholders to participate. Both the private & public sector are interdependent on each other for healthcare delivery. Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) has laid the foundation for integrated digital health infrastructure.
The government can scale up infrastructure, especially in the rural health and wellness centers to meet the acute shortage and improve accessibility. While majority of the Indian population still lives in rural areas, studies show that 60% of the healthcare facilities are concentrated in urban cities, and over 32% of people must travel beyond 5 kilo meters to access an OPD facility. This uneven distribution of healthcare facilities and health care workers across urban and rural India needs to be closely addressed through accelerated public private partnerships supporting subsidies by the government to tap into finance and expertise of the private sector.
Exploring AI solutions for last mile outreach and emergency referral solutions, and multiple such low hanging solutions can be scaled up. Healthcare workforce shortage & lack of optimal distribution of healthcare workers across the rural parts of our country have also added significant constraint in growth of hospital systems. AI solutions for efficient utilisation and integration of existing workforce including Ayush practitioners will help address 2 some of the shortfalls.
Up-skilling healthcare workforce leveraging digital universities and medical platforms will be key in meeting this growing demand. India's AI in healthcare is a trillion-dollar opportunity and we can make the most of it by overcoming the Healthcare industry challenges together and Growing partnerships between small and medium Business enterprises, tech giants, startups, academia and the government.
Panel 3 - Role of AI, Data and Wisdom in Healthcare
Panel 3 comprising Deepak Sahni , Rama Devi Lanka , @Gaurav Agarwal, Arun Goyal. , Sundar Ram , Om Manchanda and Vijay Jain ? addressed the topic of role of AI, Data and Wisdom in Healthcare.
AI is a superpower. Who, and how, of AI use will determine its impact on humanity. If leveraged effectively, AI can be a silver bullet for human health and longevity. Be it genomics, epigenetics, robotic surgeries performed remotely, cure for chronic diseases, or drug discovery- all can and will be impacted by AI in the next few years and decades in unimaginable ways.
The gap between science fiction and reality has never been narrower. AI has the potential to make drug discovery 10 times cheaper, better and faster. Can we imagine how many lives can be saved? None of us have forgotten the pandemic and we all know someone who lost their life or got seriously ill. Just a thought, that we could have saved someone’s life evokes multiple emotions. mRNA technology was deployed using advanced tech capability; the record discovery & delivery of Covid vaccines is a testimony.
On the other hand, like any super power, if AI gets into the wrong hands, it has the potential to create catastrophic crisis. Are the regulators ready to match up this speed? Can we tell a loved one that there is no option but to suffer, since healthcare ecosystem players including policy makers, regulators and private sector are yet to form a global consensus on how AI should be regulated? We know that regulators allow use of yet to be approved drugs for compassionate use. Can similar approach be adopted for use of AI?
While the world, especially developed countries are in a race to hoard data, develop AI algorithms and continue rampant use of modern medicine, it is unfortunate that life expectancy in US has come down in the last 2 years. This points to the fact that judicious use of tech and AI will not be sufficient and human wisdom will have to be integral part in the design phase itself.?
As AI takes center stage in the healthcare and pharmaceutical space, massive growth opportunities also lie for digital and traditional pharmacies & diagnostics. The online pharmacy and diagnostics sector in India has witnessed a durable surge in demand since COVID-19. Setting up of comprehensive promotion and regulatory framework leveraging AI will create the required guardrails for all businesses across the healthcare value chain to flourish within the constraints of ethical health care principles.
Advisory panels representing private players like tech partners, hospital regulators, physicians, pharmaceutical manufacturers & retailers can work with central and state governments to regulate safety & efficacy controls. As healthcare moves from prescriptive to more preventive and predictive approach, metabolomics and proteomics-based technologies using AI/ML are gaining traction.
Diagnostic genetic testing and genomic testing will significantly contribute to personalised medicine. As Indian diagnostics and biotech industry gears up to scale in these areas, ethical regulations become even more important for treatments like gene therapies. For the Indian big Pharma and biotech, AI is emerging as a game changer. From optimising production in drug manufacturing, faster discovery of new molecules, identification of right candidates for clinical trials, to data-driven digital sales & marketing- AI is significantly reducing time and cost for drug discovery and optimising drug production processes.
However, among all promises of AI, the biggest threat is susceptibility of the AI systems to data security risks; hence a robust cybersecurity infrastructure is key to sustainable use of AI in healthcare and pharmaceutical industry. To ensure safe use of AI, guidelines/ policy recommendations will play a vital role to streamline growth and ensure patient safety. Through our discussion today, we aim to gather ideas from industry experts to identify key roles and partnerships among public and private sector healthcare players to accelerate progress while enabling regulations to keep pace and not become a barrier for healthcare.?
