Aim Higher - Aim For Four Wins.
I believe if you lead with trust, respect, and decency many people mirror that back. One such leader is Keith Douglas - thank you Keith for taking the time to craft:
“Adrian has been a critical advisor, coach and sounding board on my leadership journey over the last 4 years ... his perspective has been invaluable in helping me build dynamic operating cultures across the teams I have led. He has helped me be the best version of myself.”
I have a deep-rooted belief that we can do well by doing good; humans need this level of positivity. I was recently asked “Why do I do what I do?”
This goes back to when I was aged ten. Sadly, my dad had a stroke when he was fifty and that had an enormous impact for the worst on the whole of our family. This impacted us economically and deeply shook our confidence and our belief of what was possible for us in life. Unfortunately, my dad never worked again until he passed away aged seventy-four.
Fast-forward a few decades. I am a head-hunter in London. The skills you acquire as a head-hunter mean you know how to get jobs for many people. I had quite a big team and was responsible for sourcing hundreds of jobs for them to fill each year. So, this skill combined with a strongly felt compassion meant when fused together I could help people to future- proof their career and income. I want to positively impact 20,000 careers; if I manage that, I will impact many families and more than 20,000 children who hopefully do not have too experience what I did as a child.
Why am I in the payments ecosystem? Because I feel at home here. I have worked in number of other markets such as technology because you cannot do anything of significance in the payments ecosystem on your own, even if you're a huge bank. You have to seek multiple wins.
The skillset and mindset you need to have in the payments industry is ‘competitive collaboration’. You need emotional and mental dexterity to be able to partner with a person one day, be competitors the following day, and vendors the next. This includes introducing them to a part of the ecosystem that they are missing because there is a bigger opportunity for all parties. That takes a special sort of person. Most of the people I have meet are able to display this flexibility and are decent people. They think about multiple wins and try and think about how they can help others who are less represented and give them a helping hand.
They tend to embrace the opportunities rather than the challenges. It is the choice to adopt an abundant mindset; why not make all boats rise? I do not mind winning last as long as I win at some point! I hope and trust in fellow humans.
