#artificialintelligence #71: Chief learning Officer in the Metaverse - an enabler of peer to peer learning artefacts for hybrid working
Introduction
I am currently exploring the Metaverse as a platform for transforming education.?
In that context, I have been working on the idea for a Chief Learning Officer in the Metaverse with Pinckney Benedict
These are early stage ideas but I can see a lot of potential in future.?
We welcome your thoughts
To summarise,?
The idea of a Chief learning officer is not new. Some of the concepts of a Chief Learning Officer translate to the metaverse
But we believe that the Chief Learning Officer in the metaverse will be more dynamic i.e. a person who will facilitate peer to peer learning in a hybrid work environment implemented through the metaverse as one of the foundational technologies for creating learning artefacts within organizations.?
In that sense, we believe in Chief Learning Officers(plural) as a decentralized facilitator of peer to peer learning on the metaverse. We adopt a specific definition for the metaverse as below. Ultimately, this could lead to emergent organizations rather than the static command and control driven organizations that we see today
The earliest proponent of the title Chief Learning Officer(CLO) was GE’s Jack Welch in the 1990s. The CLO was the? highest-ranking corporate officer in charge of learning management. This includes? Coaching, Engagement, Mentoring and leadership development.? HBR in the Transformer CLO has a more nuanced perspective.? In their view, a chief learning officer is not a trainer, instead they are transformers reshaping their organization along four dimensions: broadening learning goals, adopting new learning methods, transforming learning departments and curating content
The Chief Learning Officer in the Metaverse
Now, we proposed that ?the Chief Learning Officer in the metaverse will be more dynamic ie a person who will facilitate peer to peer learning in a hybrid work environment implemented through the metaverse as one of the foundational technologies for creating a learning artefact.
We believe that hybrid environments will be here to say
In this sense, the Chief Learning Officer can be a competitive advantage / glue for future companies?who adopt hybrid work.
This is actually cost effective for organizations if education within enterprises? becomes peer to peer.?
Instead of traditional classrooms, employees get together to solve complex problems by creating a learning artefact in the metaverse
An artifact,[a] or artefact? is a general term for an item made or given shape by humans, such as a tool or a work of art, especially an object of archaeological or cultural interest. (source wikipedia)
ex: Mycenaean stirrup jar from Ras Shamra (Ugarit) Syria, 1400–1300 BC below is an example of an artefact.?

Learning then becomes more like visual arts education
A Comprehensive Definition of the Metaverse
For this idea to work, its important to understand our view of the metaverse.??
By the decade’s end, the Metaverse will be worth between $6 and $13 trillion.
The Metaverse is seen as the fourth wave of computing and networking – the first three being the mainframe, personal computing, and mobile + cloud. In contrast to the previous waves, the Metaverse adds 3D experiences.??
I had yet to see a comprehensive definition of the Metaverse, but Matthew Bell presents a good (albeit long) definition of the Metaverse in a video (source below)
A massively-scaled and interoperable network of real-time-rendered 3D virtual worlds which can be experienced synchronously and persistently by an effectively unlimited number of users each with an individual sense of presence; while supporting continuity of data, such as history, identity, communications, payments, entitlements, and objects.
Breaking this definition down, this implies the metaverse will be:

To conclude
A chief learning officer in the metaverse would have the following characteristics

Technology Thinker and Writer
2 年Like this idea of a CLO. Such a role addresses the issue of remote/hybrid work where top down instruction and mentoring from senior members to junior members cannot adequately take place over a simple Zoom session. The 3d element feels complete to people (more realistic), plus the fantastic possibilities for bringing immersive contextual details into focus in real time (same basic tech as a video game) should be sufficient as a replacement for physical colocation among members of the organization. In fact it just might be better than physical occupancy due to the power to simulate so many situations in VR - as well as the eco gains by reducing energy consumption for travel. The CLO in this role would need to be a creative director first, similar to existing multi-media positions in news outlets, documentaries, and fictional shows and movies.
Thomas Lewis?love your thoughts on this.

2 年We might enable schools without boarders with the technology. #qualityeducation for the ?? My questions would be: How can we make sure its an inclusive solution? What is the climate/ environmental footprint for the hardware & software?
