The AICE Monthly Credential Forum met on Thursday, October 12, 2023 to discuss the article, “Geneva Private Universities Come Under the Spotlight.”
AICE professionals met to discuss this article as some private universities in Switzerland offer degrees that are not recognized in Switzerland, reports Swiss public broadcaster RTS, which has looked into the situation in Geneva. The situation is set to change: from 2023, the designation of “university” will be protected.

“We believe the better informed a citizenry is about the philosophies and principles used in evaluating international educational credentials, the more confident and mindful it will be in demanding the highest standard in selecting a credential evaluation service provider,” AICE website states.
Switzerland is different in its hands-off approach to private higher education that Switzerland stands out in the way it manages and oversees private higher education. The lack of oversight and regulation has led investors to regard education as a highly lucrative market, which leads to more investigation. ?
The Geneva cantonal department of education has stressed that, "all private tuition contracts fall within the sphere of private law and are not the responsibility of the State," and that “activities of this kind are carried out in accordance with the principle of economic freedom enshrined in article 27 of the Constitution.”
The lively discussion brought to light the issues of recognition, discrepancies, and standards of credential evaluation methodology.
This potentially could be a very confusing time for those evaluating educational credential documentation from Switzerland, but the group today stressed the importance of following set standards and looking to their expert research for answers.
