An Introduction to the Visionary Artist

Who is Juha P?nk?nen, both as an artist and as an individual? Could you provide a brief overview of your background and what drives your creative spirit?

I'm a father of two, and we live in Espoo, Finland, with my lovely wife. I work at the creative agency N2 Creative in Helsinki. My creative spirit comes from everything around us and my passion for creating and exploring. Lately, I've been exploring AI images and videos, but my background includes a variety of mediums that I'm passionate about, such as 3D, video art, motion graphics, and photography. AI is a natural addition to this palette.?

How do you define your artistic identity, and what aspects of your life and experiences contribute to shaping your unique perspective?

Starting to call myself a mad scientist. Every aspect of life contributes to it. You just need to keep your mind open and curious.

Beyond your primary artistic focus, are there other art forms or creative endeavors you explore?

Architecture, typography, movie title art, and film photography were big for many years.

Can you share a glimpse of what motivated you to embark on this path?

My artistic journey began in 89-90 when I started to film and edit our skate videos with two VHS decks. I could also draw, so those things linked up, too. I never was good at school. Arts was the only thing I was good at. But it took me a while to find out what to do with that skill. Then I went (got in) to photography school where they also taught Photoshop (V3), etc, and got hooked. Also did ad layouts for a few companies.

Are there specific moments or experiences that stand out as turning points in your development as an artist?

There have been a few turning points where my focus has shifted to different directions, like film photography. However, the main focus of creating something stays constant.?

What fuels your passion for creating art, and how do you keep that enthusiasm alive throughout your journey?

There is some kind of restlessness in me that keeps creating whatever I feel at that moment. Everything can inspire. One day, thrashbags look interesting, but the next day, it's just thrash.?

Can you name some key influences—people, places, or philosophies—that consistently inspire and guide your artistic expression?

Always be open to things that inspire. You don't know for what first, but it comes in time.?

Navigating Your Artistic Journey

What pivotal moments or experiences led you to become an artist, and how has your journey evolved?

Skateboarding started many things in me because it is a creative process. It also includes many aspects of art that interest me in board graphics, drawn logos, video, and photography.

Can you share a moment or realization that ignited your passion for your chosen art form?

I don't have a specific form of art that I do. But digitalization opened a lot of things for me. Started out with Photoshop 3 at school :) Also did the first premier edits. Then, a decade later, the visual AI started to grab my attention. Midjourney v2 was my first touchpoint, and things have been moving fast after that.?

How do you define your artistic style, and how has it transformed since the beginning of your career?

To be honest, I haven't found my style yet. Sometimes, I feel I'm just a mad professor exploring different mediums.?

Can you delve into specific artists, genres, or cultural elements that have left a lasting imprint on your work?

Late 80s music/skate videos have graffiti and hip-hop scenes. Bluenote cover art. Saul Basse's work. Frank Gehry. Michael Cina. David Fincher… list goes on.?

Maintaining your unique style is crucial. How do you balance staying true to yourself and embracing creative evolution??

Do work for yourself, not for others.?

Tracing the Journey from Spark to Creation

Take us through the journey from the initial spark of inspiration to the completion of one of your notable pieces.

Well, the video/light installation I did was one of the highlights (for now). I wanted to create some kind of magical summer glimmer vibe to the dark forest that was my canvas. The deadline was tight, so I had to improvise. Always in the process of creating, there are doubts about what I am doing, this is garbage, and so on. This was my first time doing this, so I was unaware of what I was getting into. The final idea came on the day of the test. I decided to mirror the material to fill the forest better. The final outcome was a more creature-of-light kind of thing, and I was thrilled to see kids jump and yell on the field while watching it.?

Do you have any unique rituals or practices that help channel your creativity and maintain consistency in your work?

Take it outside. Roam the streets. Best ideas come when you least expect them.?

How do you overcome creative blocks or challenges during your artistic process?

You can't force it, so do something different than usual to get a new perspective. Deadline also helps to force you to get things done :)

Pick one of your favorite pieces – what's the story or emotion behind it you wish viewers to grasp?

One of my favorites is a video/light installation. The goal was to add a magical summer glow to a dark forest. Despite doubts and improvisation, the breakthrough came on test day when I decided to mirror the material. The final result, a radiant creature of light, brought joy to children on the field.

Are there recurring themes or messages in your work that reflect your artistic philosophy or personal values?

A common theme is the interplay between light and nature. It mirrors my philosophy of using unconventional mediums to transform spaces and evoke emotions. The spontaneous decision to mirror the material highlights my belief in adapting during the creative process. The joyous reactions, especially from children, underscore the importance of creating emotionally resonant and delightful art.

Unveiling the Essence of Artistic Success

Beyond external recognition, how do you personally define success as an artist? Can you share a moment that encapsulates success for you?

I do art mainly for myself, but it is shifting to wanting to get stuff "out in the open." One of the best feelings was looking at people's reactions to my video installation.?

What are your professional goals, and how do you envision your artistic journey unfolding in the coming years?

Get more stuff out to people to see and experience.

Share a memorable experience that tested your resilience as an artist. How did you overcome it?

Every bigger project has those moments. If it goes smoothly, there is something wrong.?

Forging creative bonds with AICC

How did your connection with AICC come about, and what significance does being a Featured Creator hold for you?

I first saw it on Seth P. 's or Ben Roffelsen 's hashtags and got curious.

In what ways has your involvement with the AICC community influenced your growth and artistic exploration?

I see lots of inspiring artists and ideas being produced. Amazing sandbox of visuals to feed more ideas and inspire others to push things further. As an artist, I'm a relatively closed type of person, but the community challenges are fun.?

What advice would you give to budding artists aiming to carve their niche in the creative industry?

Oh, it seems more challenging these days because everybody is pushing out content. How to stand out. The tools are there, but the most important thing is the idea. You can feed anything from it if it's strong enough.?

To what extent do you believe networking and community involvement contribute to an artist's journey?

It's more open these days. You can get great feedback from your peers but must be open to those comments and suggestions.?

Insights and Reflections in January 2024

As we embark on a new year, do you have any specific resolutions or artistic goals you'd like to share for 2024?

The year will be impactful?and epic!

How do you hope your art will connect with people in the upcoming year, and what messages do you wish to convey?

No bigger goals yet. Doing more and more AI videos, so something on that medium.

What are your favorite hobbies or interests outside of your artistic pursuits?

I love hiking, hanging out with my family, and skateboarding, of course.?

Is there a specific genre or artist whose music accompanies your creative process?

Totally depends on the mood of that day. But lots of hip-hop and house. Sometimes, I listen to the first Prodigy album when I need to get things done. The video installation process heard lots of Pink Floyd live in Pompei.?

Explore, Create, and Follow the Flow

Anything else you'd like to convey to our readers or fellow artists as we conclude this inspiring conversation?

Keep creating whatever feels suitable for you. Also, explore beyond your comfort zone. There is always stuff to get inspiration from. Go with the flow of the art/picture/edit you're doing and see where it takes you. It won't be a winner every time, but you learn new things while doing it. Peace.
