Can you tell us about you and your journey as an artist? How did you begin working with AI?

I started using AI to create new fashion designs and explore how technology could revolutionize fashion design. My focus was initially on wearable fashion, but over time, I shifted my attention to creating art that exists at the edge of fashion design.

What drew you to the intersection of technology and art?

The endless potential for discovery and innovation drew me to the intersection of technology and art. Technology, particularly AI, offers tools that push beyond traditional boundaries, introducing randomness and computational creativity that challenge conventional artistic processes. I am fascinated by the dynamic interplay between human intention and machine unpredictability, which allows me to explore new dimensions of self-expression and redefine what art can be.

Who are your major artistic influences, both traditional and digital?

I’m drawing much inspiration from fashion, as this is my background. I’m a huge fan of Lucie and Luke Meier's vision for Jil Sander—their minimalism and refined aesthetic resonate deeply with me. At the same time, I admire more provocative and boundary-pushing approaches in fashion. In art, I’m captivated by the blurry, enigmatic works of Gerhard Richter, which evoke a sense of mystery and emotional depth. I’m also fascinated by the work of digital artists and photographers like Eamonn Zeel Freel and Charlie Engman.

How has your cultural background or personal experiences shaped your work?

My cultural background and personal experiences have deeply shaped my work, often drawing me toward exploring the unseen forces that surround us. I’m particularly inspired by Nikola Tesla’s belief that to understand the universe, one must think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration. This perspective influences my artistic process, as I strive to capture the intangible and create works that resonate with the underlying rhythms and energies that connect us all. Additionally, I often create women in alpine locations, reflecting my deep connection to nature. Growing up close to the Alps, nature is not only a huge source of inspiration for me but also serves as a place where I recharge my batteries when needed, grounding myself in its beauty and power.

Can you describe a turning point in your career where AI became central to your art?

A turning point in my career where AI became central to my art was probably in the summer of 2023. That’s when I realized how quickly I could communicate ideas with AI—concepts that would have taken me much longer to develop previously. I had so much fun creating AI-generated art and exploring where my inner curator would guide me that it became a true passion. This exploration eventually led me to meet the right people at the right time, and together, we cofounded stoodio.ai—a platform for brands, designers, and fashion enthusiasts.

How do you integrate AI into your creative process from concept to completion?

I integrate AI into my creative process by using it as a tool from concept to completion. It begins with feeding the AI prompts that reflect my initial vision, often inspired by nature, energy, or fashion. The AI’s responses provide a wealth of unexpected interpretations, which I then curate and refine, guided by my inner aesthetic sensibilities. Throughout the process, I experimented with the AI-generated pictures and further manipulated the outputs to add a personal touch. For me, the magic lies in the dialogue between human intention and machine unpredictability, allowing the process to evolve organically until the final piece emerges.

What tools, techniques, or AI models do you use, and how do you select them?

The tools and techniques I use depend on the outcome I want to achieve. If I’m looking for quick and creative results, I use Midjourney, which encourages a more experimental and open-ended approach to generating ideas. On the other hand, if I need a very specific and refined outcome, I turn to Flux, which provides greater control and precision. These two tools are the most valuable for my ar. They each serve different phases of my creative process and allow me to balance spontaneity with intentionality.

How much control do you delegate to the AI versus your input?

As a designer, I usually have very specific ideas about how the outcome should be, which means I retain a significant amount of control over the process. This often makes my workflow slower, as I spend a lot of time manipulating the AI-generated outputs to align with my vision. While I enjoy the creative dialogue with AI, it's rare for me to get an outcome that I’m almost happy with right away. When that happens, it’s a delightful surprise, but most of the time, I treat the first generated pics as a starting point rather than the final solution.

Could you describe a typical day in your studio when working on an AI-driven project?

A typical day in my studio when working on an AI-driven project starts with reflecting on the mood and emotion I want the finished piece to convey. I spend time imagining how I want viewers to feel when they see it. Next, I dive into research, looking for reference images that capture and transport the mood I’m aiming for. Once I’ve gathered enough inspiration, I begin prompting the AI, experimenting and refining the prompts step by step. I manipulate and adjust the outputs repeatedly, iterating until I achieve an outcome that aligns with my vision. It’s a thoughtful and iterative process, blending creativity with precision.

How do you overcome creative blocks when working with AI?

When I encounter a creative block while working with AI, I stop trying to force creativity and shift my focus to something completely different. I must interrupt the process when I sense I’m heading toward a dead end. Taking a step back allows me to reset, gain fresh perspectives, and often return with renewed energy and inspiration.

Laura Buechner

What key themes or ideas do you explore in your AI-generated art?

I explore themes like fashion in all its aspects, including designing new garments and fabrics, styling, jewelry, and creating editorials. Additionally, I’m drawn to broader concepts like energy and nature, which often intersect with my fashion-focused work to create a deeper narrative.

Are there any societal, ethical, or philosophical questions your work addresses?

Not always, but sometimes I aim to convey a message through my work. Last summer, for example, I created a project featuring women wearing jewelry with pendants that said "F*** AFD" in protest against the right-wing party in Germany. I’m deeply concerned about the growing number of people voting for right-wing parties across Europe. As a German, looking at our country’s history, I find this trend deeply troubling and sad. It’s my way of expressing frustration and raising awareness about the dangers of this political shift.

Laura Buechner

How do you incorporate emotions or abstract concepts into your AI pieces?

In projects focused on themes like energy or nature, I strive to transform abstract ideas into compelling visuals by working with colors and textures that evoke specific emotions and convey a particular mood. I carefully select these elements to resonate with the concept I want to express. AI allows me to experiment and refine these choices, helping me create pieces that fully embody the emotions and ideas I aim to communicate, making the process both dynamic and deeply personal.

How has the public and critics’ reception of your work evolved with the use of AI?

The public and critics’ reception of my work has evolved since I began using AI, and it felt natural to integrate AI into fashion design. I also feel that AI is more readily accepted for generating fashion-related art compared to other forms of art. That said, there is still a lot of critique surrounding AI-generated art in general. I believe this will continue to evolve, gradually leading to a wider acceptance as people begin to understand its potential as a creative tool and the artistic intent behind its use.

Laura Buechner

What is the most memorable reaction you’ve received to one of your AI-generated pieces?

One of the most memorable reactions I’ve received was when someone looked at my work and said, “Wow, this is magic! How did you do it?” I think many people assume it must be super easy to generate amazing images with AI, but when you dive into the process, you realize that’s not the case. Indeed, you can quickly create pictures, but generating truly good AI art takes time, skill, and a deep understanding of design and composition. It’s far from effortless, and that’s what makes it so rewarding.

How do you engage with audiences who may be unfamiliar with AI art?

When engaging with audiences unfamiliar with AI art, I focus on demystifying the process and sharing how AI is a tool rather than a replacement for creativity. I explain how much thought and intention go into crafting prompts, curating results, and refining the outputs to align with my artistic vision. I also like to draw parallels to other technologies, like photography or digital design, to show how AI is simply an extension of an artist’s toolkit.

Laura Buechner

How do you see AI shaping the future of art and creativity?

I think AI will become the most important tool for future designers and artists, revolutionizing how we approach creativity. However, with the rise of AI, there’s already a flood of AI-generated art, as it allows almost anyone to produce creative outputs. This makes the ability to develop a unique taste and sense of art and design more crucial than ever. The most important future skill will be the ability to act as a curator—making thoughtful decisions based on a refined artistic vision and personal aesthetic. It’s this distinctive perspective that will set great artists apart in a world of abundant AI-generated content.

Are there any specific advancements in AI you’re excited to explore in your future works?

I’m particularly excited about advancements in AI that allow for even greater control and personalization in the creative process. Tools that combine intuitive interfaces with precise customization. I’m also intrigued by the potential of AI to simulate entirely new materials or processes, such as generating hyper-realistic fabric textures or exploring multidimensional art that blends visuals, motion, and sound. These advancements open up endless possibilities for pushing the boundaries of art and design.

How do you stay informed about AI developments and integrate new tools into your creative process?

Keeping up with AI developments is quite challenging because the tools and technologies evolve so rapidly. I try to stay informed by regularly reading the latest news and updates from AI-focused profiles.

How would you advise emerging artists to begin working with AI?

My advice for emerging artists who want to start working with AI is to focus on mastering one tool first. Once you’ve gained a strong understanding of how it works and how to use it effectively, you can begin exploring other tools step by step. Jumping between different tools without mastering them can be overwhelming and may hinder your creative process. Taking it one step at a time allows you to build confidence and develop a more cohesive workflow as you integrate AI into your art.
