AI in Zimbabwe: Solarpro joins the Conversation Sparked by James Manyika

Zimbabwe rarely grabs headlines in the tech world, but a recent visit by a heavyweight changed that, James Manyika , (Senior Vice President at Google-Alphabet reporting to the CEO), sent shockwaves through the nation with his talk on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its potential to reshape our economy.

This buzz couldn't have come at a better time, coinciding with the partial lifting of US sanctions on Zimbabwe. Excitement is in the air, and Solarpro, Zimbabwe's solar energy leader, is right in the middle of the conversation.

  1. AI is having a moment. There has been significant progress in AI, especially over the last decade, due to more computational power and data becoming available. This has resulted in unprecedented capabilities in machine vision, image classification, natural language processing, and pattern recognition. All these can be leveraged on to help Zimbabwe grow, especially in Agriculture and related industries.
  2. AI presents an opportunity for Zimbabwe's development. AI can be used to address many of Africa's challenges, such as poverty, disease, and food insecurity. For example, AI can be used to develop new agricultural techniques, improve healthcare delivery, and create new jobs. Instead of taking away jobs AI is actually increasing opportunities in Africa.
  3. There are challenges and gaps that need to be addressed. These challenges include ensuring that AI is used ethically and responsibly, addressing the digital divide, and developing the skills and talent needed to take advantage of AI.
  4. Zimbabwe needs to take action to capitalize on the AI opportunity. This includes developing AI foundations, enabling infrastructure, building skills and talent pipelines, creating vibrant AI ecosystems, and developing robust AI governance frameworks. I am excited about the angle of building AI Ecosystems as I have been involved in a technology hub - Tech Hub Harare since 2018. The innovation hub works with startup founders solving various community challenges using technology.
  5. Google is committed to supporting Africa in its AI journey. Google is investing in AI research, providing access to AI tools and resources, and working with African partners to develop AI solutions for Africa's challenges. I remember my first interactions with bard.google.com some months ago and continue to marvel at how the technology has gotten better and better in time.?
  6. Overall, James Manyika's speech is a call to action Zimbabwe to seize the opportunity that AI presents. By working together,? government, businesses, and civil society can ensure that AI is used for good and that Africa benefits from the transformative power of this technology.

What does this mean for me in the solar industry? Renewable energy companies have embraced AI in their equipment and applications. At Solarpro Zimbabwe we too have embraced the use of AI and are installing solar systems capable of learning from the current weather and usage patterns. We are also developing our own platform that allows us to learn from past faults and hopefully using this data to prevent them from happening in the future. This is the power of technology and it is transforming how we run our business.?

In the energy sector there is quite a lot that AI can do to help the industry become more efficient. Here are some of the things we are learning as we build our solar business.?

Power Management: For companies AI can analyze real-time data to predict energy needs and optimize operations, integrating renewable sources like solar seamlessly. This can help reduce costs and help companies plan ahead of time.?

Predictive Maintenance: AI can analyze sensor data from data loggers, inverters and batteries and help identify potential issues before they occur, minimizing downtime and maximizing system efficiency.

Demand Forecasting: AI can analyze historical data and weather patterns to predict energy demand, helping consumers optimize energy usage and reduce reliance on traditional sources.

At Solarpro, we recognize the transformative power of AI. We are actively exploring how to integrate AI into our solutions to provide even greater value to our customers.

Thank you Nyasha for such an insightful Oped, if I may call this article that name. Having attended the UNECA conference in Victoria Falls and learnt, what is coming on the energy sector space, I can agree with you on how AI can be a catalyst to energy management. The call to action of all stakeholders in energy cannot be overemphasized. We can do it for our beloved Zimbabwe.
