AI & You: What Your Feelings About AI Reveal About Your Deepest Motivations
BRUNELLO GIANELLA
For 40 years, I’ve worked with CEOs, business owners, and start-up teams, achieving success with strategies aligned to their mission. ACT NOW with motivational intelligence: Your way to master emotions.
?? A Call for Self-Reflection on AI and Your Own Motivations
The AI revolution is here. Some embrace it with open arms, excited about the limitless possibilities. Others are skeptical, cautious, or even outright resistant. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself:
?? Why do I feel the way I do about AI?
?? What motivates my stance—fear, curiosity, control, fairness, or security?
?? What hidden biases (self-hugging) shape my perspective?
It’s easy to think of AI as merely a technology, a tool, or a trend—but the way we approach it reveals something much deeper: our core human motivations.
The Self-Hugging Trap: “My Values Are the Right Ones”
We all tend to believe that our values and beliefs are not just good for us, but universally correct. This cognitive bias, called self-hugging, influences how we perceive AI:
?? If you’re cautious about AI → You may believe those who embrace it are reckless.
?? If you’re excited about AI → You may think skeptics are just resisting inevitable progress.
?? If you want strict AI regulations → You may feel those pushing open-source AI are naive.
?? If you support free and open AI → You may view regulated AI advocates as overly controlling.
But what if we took a step back and questioned our own perspective? What if AI, like everything else in life, isn’t inherently good or bad, but simply a reflection of our own motivations and intentions?
What Does Your View on AI Say About You?
Each of us is driven by a unique mix of 16 basic human desires (Reiss Motivation Profile). The way we interact with AI is not random—it is deeply connected to our intrinsic motivations:
?? Excited about AI?
You might have a high curiosity drive (love for knowledge), a strong power drive (desire to stay ahead), or a social contact drive (fascination with AI-human interaction).
?? Cautious or skeptical about AI?
You may have a high tranquility drive (need for security), a strong order drive (desire for predictability), or a high honor drive (concern for ethical implications).
?? Actively developing AI models?
Your motivation may be independence (control over technology), status (recognition as a pioneer), or idealism (belief in AI for social good).
?? Avoiding AI altogether?
This could stem from a strong need for autonomy (fear of over-dependence), a saving drive (concern over costs), or a vengeance drive (distrust of Big Tech).
?? Adopting AI reluctantly but pragmatically?

Maybe you balance order and power (structured growth), or curiosity and tranquility (innovation with caution).
?? Where do you see yourself in this spectrum? What’s your primary motivation?
The AI Conversation Isn’t Just About Tech—It’s About Human Nature
The next time you discuss AI, notice where your reactions come from:
? Are you defending your position because of logic—or personal values?
? Are you resisting AI because of real concerns—or an emotional gut reaction?
? Are you excited about AI because of true benefits—or because you love being ahead of the curve?
A Challenge for You: Reflect Before You React
AI is not a threat or a savior—it is simply a tool that mirrors human intent. What we fear or embrace in AI is what we fear or embrace in ourselves.
Ask yourself:
?? What’s my core motivation in my AI stance?
?? Am I truly open to other perspectives, or am I self-hugging?
?? How can I engage with AI in a way that aligns with my values but also respects others’?
Let’s move beyond AI as just a debate about tech—and start seeing it as a mirror of our human motivations.
I’d love to hear from you: What’s YOUR motivation in approaching AI? Let’s reflect together.

3 周This is a good article, and I'm 50/50. I'm both happy and not happy about AI. I'm happy because it enables us to accomplish more in less time. But I'm not happy with it, as I'm worried it can wipe away our jobs. However, I accepted the reality that AI is here to stay, and I'm doing my best to work with it.
