AI In The Workplace: Preparing For The Future Of Jobs

Ever notice how certain innovations reshape the course of human history? Think the industrial revolution, the invention of the assembly line, the rise of organized labor, and the internet. Each event a turning point, altering the trajectory of our lives. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) might be on deck to join that exclusive club.

Generative AI, a marvel of technology that can create content like stories and images from scratch, has been stirring up some unsettling headlines. It's often tagged as the potential destructor of jobs. However, there's a key distinction here: 'displacement' doesn't equate to 'elimination.' It calls for adaptation, not panic.

The Impact of Generative AI: A Closer Look

According to a Goldman Sachs study, around 25% of jobs in the U.S. and Europe could be influenced by generative AI. The report also forecasts that 18% of all jobs might face automation due to AI, especially in larger economies.

That sounds quite grim, doesn't it? But let's widen our perspective. The same research points out that most of us are working in jobs that didn't even exist in 1940. And guess what's responsible for 85% of the employment growth over the past 80 years? Yep, new technology.

So, historically, while technology does eliminate or automate some jobs, it also ends up creating many more in the long run.

Is Your Job on the Line?

Predicting exactly how generative AI will affect your specific job isn't clear-cut. But we do have some insights about which industries might face major disruption. The top five U.S. professions likely to be most impacted by AI are Office and Administrative Support, Legal, Architecture and Engineering, Life/Physical/Social Science, and Business and Financial Operations. On the other end of the spectrum, Construction and Extraction, Installation, Maintenance and Repair, and Building and Grounds Cleaning and Maintenance should see the least impact.

Your AI Preparedness Strategy

Understanding how to prepare for the AI Revolution is akin to mastering the principles of forming a habit. First, consider it as the '1% improvement' philosophy. If an office admin spends 10 minutes today learning how to use AI for scheduling, they'll find themselves freed from hours of mundane tasks in the future. It's the compounded effect of small improvements.

Similarly, a lawyer who invests a little time each day to understand how AI can analyze legal contracts will soon find herself with extra time to focus on complex legal strategies, thereby increasing her value. It's all about leveraging automation, much like building good habits to automate success.

As you build your AI skills, remember the 'Two-Minute Rule'. Start by dedicating just two minutes a day to understand the technology, and gradually increase your learning time as it becomes a natural part of your routine. The 'Habit Stacking' principle also applies; if you're a financial advisor who's used to reading market trends every morning, stack a new habit of reading about AI's impact on finance. As in habit formation, persistence and consistency are key in preparing for the AI revolution.

While there's no universal formula for learning AI, the risk associated with experimenting is relatively low. Remember, it's vital to be mindful of what you share online and with AI entities - basic online privacy measures go a long way.

The initial steps towards understanding AI and harnessing its potential could be invaluable in the future. The trick is not to view AI as a threat but as a tool, a partner in progress.
