AI IN THE WORKFORCE
According to research, only a small percentage of the workforce is currently using AI effectively. Specifically:
- 7% of professionals are in what the report calls the "AI class". These are people who have experimented with various large language models (LLMs), learned how to prompt them effectively, and integrated AI into their personal workflows.
- In comparison, nearly 60% are classified as "AI Newcomers" - people who have tried ChatGPT a few times but haven't committed to using it regularly or learned to use it well.
- 25% are "AI Experimenters" who use AI about once a week and report small productivity gains.
- 11% are "AI Skeptics" who almost never use AI.
The report suggests that most companies are not yet seeing significant productivity gains from AI across their workforce, as the majority of employees are still in the "newcomer" phase of AI adoption and proficiency. The small "AI class" is described as being "way ahead of everyone else" in terms of AI usage and productivity benefits, but they represent only a small fraction of knowledge workers overall.
