[AI vs. Humans] Triangle Tech Night

[AI vs. Humans] Triangle Tech Night

Last night, the Triangle Tech Night at Innovate Carolina focused on an important topic front of mind: AI vs. Humans. This was my second experience at a Triangle Tech Night event, and I extend my thanks to the organizers Chip Kennedy and JP Maloney for the invitation and for facilitating the development of a vibrant AI community in the Triangle area.

The event successfully brought together investors, founders, educators, professionals, and local residents to engage in discussions about pressing topics in AI. The networking opportunities were excellent, allowing attendees from diverse backgrounds to connect, share insights, and learn about each others’ journeys.

The panelists provided their views based on their learnings and experiences from being in the AI space. The informal setting allowed for a healthy debate among the attendees to freely share views and concerns.

Here are some key take-aways I would like to share. They come in pairs: the key theme and a summary sentence:

* Agentic AI is the hottest trend today - AI Agents are quickly evolving as the future wave of AI advancement. Agents are take action to solve a problem or provide a specific result rather than respond to questions from prompts.

* Confusion about AI use cases - There are numerous AI implementations today that lack clear focus, a defined problem statement, identified stakeholders, and specified desired outcomes.

* Pace of AI Innovation, Pace of AI Adoption, and Risks of AI - There are concerns around the pace of the technology evolution, its adoption by the masses, and the risks that might manifest with this proliferation.

* Responsible AI - There are deliberate efforts to control AI hallucinations by providing traceability to sources and algorithms that check Gen AI outputs. These checks are for bias, accuracy of information, and determining if a human is required to validate the output.

* Risks & Fears of AI - There are a number of risks and fears that come with the AI technology such as impact on jobs, bias, exclusion, and even loss of control.

* AI Bias and it’s implications - Everyone is aware of the potential AI bias as a result of the training data. Concerted efforts by industry leaders are underway to address and curb that bias.

* Optimism vs. Pessimism - There are two camps reacting to all the developments in the AI space. One camp is optimistic and tries to be proactive in steering the narrative while the other is not so optimistic and is fearful of the coming implications.

* Future Workforce & Skillset - The up and coming generation that is attending or about to attend college are confused about AI and its impacts. The most favorable reaction is to embrace it and figure out how to become capable and equipped with the technology.

* The Digital Divide - There are concerns about the divide between those with access and those without access to the technology and the divide it creates over time.

The event was a great gathering highlighting the multifaceted developing relationship between AI and humans. It brought together a diverse group of investors, founders, educators, professionals, and local residents. The discussions underscored the rapid advancements in AI and its implications on our world. The event clearly showed the necessity for ongoing conversations and collaborative efforts to move forward responsibly and equitably, ensuring the benefits are accessible to all.
