Hello BrainBitters,
Welcome to another edition of Rethink: Eve’s BrainBits. This week, we explore AI versus AI, or in other words, Artificial Intelligence versus Augmented Intelligence.
AI & content creation
I receive many questions about AI for content creation. With tools like ChatGPT, Bard, and Copilot, AI-generated content is everywhere. While convenient, this trend raises questions about authenticity and value.
Many find AI-generated posts dull and impersonal, leading to growing criticism. On a daily basis, I see posts criticizing AI-generated content. Truth be told, they don’t engage me either. I see the format and likely click away before even reading it.
They all look the same and sound the same.
"Technology alone is not enough. It's technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the results that make our heart sing." — Steve Jobs
AI vs. AI: What is the difference?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is about technology that performs tasks requiring human intelligence, such as language understanding and decision-making.
Augmented Intelligence, on the other hand, enhances human capabilities by combining human expertise with AI efficiency. This is about supporting, not replacing, human intelligence.
"Augmented Intelligence will be the driving force behind the future of knowledge work, blending human intuition with machine precision." — Satya Nadella
At its core, the main difference lies in how we use technology.
With Augmented Intelligence, we use AI to enhance our human expertise, which remains crucial.
Artificial Intelligence performs the task, while Augmented Intelligence supports human decision-making.
While many talk about augmented intelligence, few use it as such.
As you can see in the diagram, the real value, long-term, is found in Augmented Intelligence.
Some wonder whether AI will replace them.
People who use AI will be replaced by people who don’t, but people who use Artificial Intelligence will be replaced by those using Augmented Intelligence.
?Let’s explore a risk for knowledge workers
Knowledge workers build on their unique expertise. Clients seek their insights, not generic AI outputs. Using AI for content can undermine credibility and suggest replaceability.
Consider this: as an expert, your clients value your nuanced understanding. If your posts appear AI-generated, do you think this will enhance or diminish your professional image and perceived value? When you see such posts, do you think, "Oh, I need that person's unique expertise to solve my problem," or do you start to think, "I need to ask ChatGPT"? Exactly my point.
They might start to question the value of your expertise, thinking they could get similar insights from any AI tool.
Rethinking AI use
In a few years, we'll look back at this time as the beginning of the broader use of AI. If we fail to invest in Augmented Intelligence and limit its use to Artificial Intelligence, we're missing the boat.
