Computers have become our indispensable allies, aiding us in accomplishing work, providing entertainment, and connecting us to the world. I am part of the first generation of Millennials, who grew up as digital natives and gamers, we have developed a unique familiarity with computers and technology. We often find ourselves more adept at understanding the inner workings of these machines than understanding our own complexities. You got baited by the title because of this same reason.
But what if we shift our perspective and view ourselves through the lens of computer parts? This mental model offers a thought-provoking opportunity to explore the parallel between our own human system and the technology we have built. I hope it offers a means to demystify our roles in the workforce and alleviate anxieties surrounding the rise of AI.
By exploring the reverse perspective and recognizing the parallels between our human system and the computer parts analogy, we unlock a powerful tool for self-reflection and growth. It's not just about understanding how we've built machines in our image, but also about recognizing how these machines can reflect our own abilities and potential.
Like building a PC for to play the latest game of life let’s start looking at the human-computer system.
The CPU - Data
At the heart of every computer is the Central Processing Unit (CPU), the powerhouse that drives all operations. In the grand architecture of a computer, the CPU interprets and performs most of the commands from the computer's hardware and software. It's the brain of the computer, the component that makes critical decisions and enables all functionality.
In my personal mental model, I've chosen Data as the counterpart for the CPU. In our modern society, data is the driving force behind decision-making. It's the raw information that we gather, analyze, and interpret to make informed decisions. Just as the CPU processes instructions, I process data, using it to guide my actions and decisions.
Actionable Item: To upgrade my 'CPU', I make a conscious effort to stay data-informed. I conduct extensive research, stay abreast of the latest trends and developments in my field, and use data to guide my decision-making process.
Your 'CPU' might be different. It could be your ability to empathize with others, your knack for storytelling, or your talent for spotting trends. These are all 'data' in their own right - information that you process and use to guide your actions. Whatever your 'CPU' is, it's the driving force behind your actions. You can enhance your 'CPU' by honing your unique abilities and staying curious about the world around you.
The Motherboard - Personal Brand
Just as the motherboard is the central hub that connects and coordinates all components in a computer, your brand serves as the central hub that connects and represents your professional identity, values, and offerings.
Your brand encompasses the essence of who you are, what you stand for, and the unique value you bring to the table. It acts as the foundation upon which you build your reputation and establish meaningful connections with your audience and clients.
Similar to the motherboard providing stability, support, and connectivity, your brand serves as a platform that supports and unifies all aspects of your professional presence. It provides a cohesive framework that guides your communication, messaging, and visual identity.
Actionable Item: To enhance your "Motherboard" or brand, focus on developing a strong and authentic brand identity. Define your unique value proposition, clarify your target audience, and craft a compelling brand story. Ensure consistency across all touchpoints, from your website and social media profiles to your communication style and visual elements.
By nurturing and strengthening your brand, you establish a solid foundation for your professional endeavors. It helps you create a cohesive and memorable presence in the industry, foster trust and credibility, and attract opportunities that align with your vision and values.
The Storage Device - The Internet
The storage device is where a computer stores data. It's the repository of all the information the computer processes.
In my personal mental model, I've chosen the Internet as the counterpart for the storage device. The internet is my vast repository of information and resources. It's where I store and retrieve data, much like a storage device in a computer.
Actionable Item: To enhance my 'Storage Device', I leverage the internet as a resource. I use it to gather information, learn new skills, and stay updated on industry trends.
Your 'Storage Device' could be different. It could be your personal library, your collection of experiences, or your network of contacts. It's where you draw inspiration, gather data, and share your creations with the world. You can enhance your 'Storage Device' by continually learning, experiencing, and connecting with others.

The RAM - Time
RAM (Random Access Memory) is a type of computer memory that can be read and changed in any order, typically used to store working data and machine code. It plays a crucial role in a computer's ability to process and handle information efficiently. Interestingly, the speed at which RAM operates is measured in clock cycles, emphasizing its connection to time.
In my personal mental model, I've chosen Time as the counterpart for RAM. Time is the resource I allocate to various tasks, and it influences my ability to process information, execute tasks, and create value. Just as the clock speed of RAM determines how quickly data can be accessed and processed, the efficient use of time determines the speed and effectiveness of my work.
Actionable Item: To optimize my 'RAM' or Time, I continually work on improving my time management skills. I prioritize tasks, set realistic goals, and ensure efficient allocation of time to maximize productivity and effectiveness.
Your 'RAM' or Time could be approached differently. It could be your ability to multitask, your capacity for deep focus, or your knack for quick decision-making. You can enhance your 'RAM' by developing good organizational habits, setting clear priorities, and improving your time management skills.
AI is a RAM upgrade
In my personal mental model, AI acts as a time saver. By leveraging the capabilities of AI, we can automate routine tasks, analyze vast amounts of data quickly, and generate innovative solutions in a fraction of the time it would take us alone. AI effectively expands our capacity to work within the given time frame, enhancing productivity and enabling us to focus on more complex and creative endeavors.
Actionable Item: I embrace AI technologies that can enhance my work. I explore automation tools, utilize data analytics platforms, and leverage AI-driven insights to streamline processes, accelerate decision-making, and save valuable time.
Your ‘RAM upgrade’ could be any tool or technology that enhances your work and saves you time, from AI to productivity apps tailored to your specific needs. By embracing such technologies, you can amplify your productivity, gain more time for meaningful tasks, and stay at the forefront of innovation.
The Operating System - Design
The Operating System (OS) is the fundamental software that powers a computer. It manages the computer's memory and processes, as well as all of its software and hardware. It also allows you to communicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the computer's language.
In my personal mental model, I've chosen Design as the counterpart for the OS. Design is the foundation of how I interact with information, solve problems, and create solutions. It's the underlying principle that guides my work, much like how an OS manages and coordinates activities in a computer.
Actionable Item: To enhance my 'OS', I continually refine my design thinking skills. I make design an integral part of my workflow, from the initial conceptualization to the final execution.
Your 'OS' could be different. It could be Art, Music, or any other discipline that forms the core of your professional identity. It's the platform upon which all your skills and applications run. You can enhance your 'OS' by continually refining your skills and making your chosen discipline an integral part of your workflow.
Skills are just apps but apps are not skills.
Applications are software that performs specific functions. In my analogy, my skills are the applications running on my Design OS. I Install, uninstall, and update skills or apps as needed. Some can be boring but needs to run in the background, some are fun and entertaining! Learning becomes like a video game, that I don’t stop playing.
Actionable Item: I continually develop my skills. I practice and refine my existing skills, and I am open to learning new ones.
Your applications could be your skills in painting, your talent for playing an instrument, or your proficiency in a foreign language. They are the tools you use to interact with your environment, execute tasks, and create value. You can enhance your applications by continually practicing, refining, and learning new skills.
Remember, this is my personal blueprint. Your Operating System could be Art, Music, or any other discipline that forms the core of your professional identity. The beauty of this analogy is that it's customizable, allowing each of us to decode our unique digital DNA.
By viewing myself through this lens, I've gained a better understanding of my strengths and identified areas for improvement. Recognizing what part to upgrade has led to smoother operations, faster results, and more harmonious coexistence with AI. After all, I am not being replaced by machines; I am evolving alongside them.
Before I let you off to select your ‘Personal Computer’ parts - let's ponder a thought-provoking question. If the day of singularity arrives - the moment when AI achieves consciousness or evolves into Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) - what will be the equivalent leap for us, the human nodes in this vast network? What will our singularity look like, and how will it redefine our existence in this ever-evolving digital landscape?
