AI Update NOW: A Week of Mind-Blowing Breakthroughs in Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has come a long way since its inception, and this week marks one of the most groundbreaking periods in its history. In a nutshell, we have seen an unprecedented number of breakthroughs in AI technology, ranging from new language models to updates on existing ones, not to mention exciting innovations that integrate AI into other software.

Monday | March 13, 2023

This week has been an absolute whirlwind, with new AI announcements making headlines every day. The introduction of Stanford's alpaca 7B model on Monday was a significant breakthrough that could potentially democratize the use of large language models. The model's training on 52,000 instructions, similar to GPT-3, is more lightweight, making it feasible to run on a local computer. When tested against GPT-3 and Chat GPT, the model performed nearly as well, proving that large language models are becoming more accessible to everyone.

On Tuesday, Google announced plans to release AI functionality inside its workspace tools. This update will bring GPT-3-like functionality inside Google Docs and other Google tools, allowing the software to complete tasks such as auto-completing emails, brainstorming ideas, and even writing entire articles, resumes, and cover letters. Google's move is a significant step forward in democratizing AI technology and rendering obsolete many AI-based companies currently building similar tools.

But Tuesday's AI news didn't end there. Google also announced its next generation of AI, the PALM API, to select developers. The new model is multimodal, combining image recognition with text prompts. Additionally, Anthropic, a company heavily invested in by Google, introduced Claude, its version of a chatbot, which is only available through APIs at the moment.

However, the week's biggest news came when GPT-4 was released on Tuesday. Chat GPT users got their hands on GPT-4, which performed significantly better than previous versions. The model uses visual inputs and is multimodal, allowing it to decipher information from images and text prompts. GPT-4's introduction is a massive breakthrough for the AI world and sets the stage for even more advanced language models in the future.

On Wednesday, Mid Journey Version 5 launched, generating more photorealistic images and boasting a new tiling feature that produces perfectly aligned tiled images. The software's prompt system has been changed to recognize standard language better, making it easier for users to communicate with the software. The software's developers also revealed that they're working on an API for the product, meaning we'll likely see other products pop up that use Mid Journey for art generation.

Microsoft made its move on Thursday, launching 365 co-pilot, and adding AI to all its software. Users can now access AI functionality in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, making it easier to perform tasks such as scheduling meetings and summarizing notes. Also on Thursday, Baidu introduced its rival to Chat GPT, called Ernie, which disappointed investors, as it failed to impress during its one-hour presentation.

Now, I started writing this Friday so the AI-one-upmanship for the week ain't over, but overall, this week has clearly been a game-changer for AI, and the momentum shows no signs of slowing down. The GTC event, Nvidia's AI conference, starts next week, and many exciting announcements are expected from the conference.

As AI technology continues to evolve, staying abreast of the latest developments is essential. It is also critical to consider how AI will affect our lives and society as a whole. AI has already revolutionized many industries, and the breakthroughs of this week suggest that it will continue to do so. It is clear that AI has the potential to change the world as we know it, so keeping a pulse on the developments would enable us to learn faster on how to adapt and thrive in this emerging digital landscape.
