AI Under Watch: The EU AI Act
The Council of the European Union gave final approval to the EU AI Act on May 21, 2024, signifying a critical step toward the legislation's full implementation.
The EU AI Act is a law that intends to create a comprehensive legal framework for regulating AI systems.
The Risk-Based System of the AI Act
The EU AI Act outlines a risk-based approach meaning that the higher the risk, the stricter the rules. It divides AI systems into the following categories:
·?????? Unacceptable risk
·?????? High risk
·?????? Limited risk
·?????? Minimal risk
The EU AI Act prohibits certain high-risk AI systems, including emotion-recognition AI, real-time biometrics, and social scoring, to protect individual freedoms and prevent discrimination.
Additionally, the AI Act imposes new rules on generative AI and recommendation algorithms, while addressing general-purpose AI models by requiring transparency, risk management, and ethical data use.
