AI & Unconscious Incompetence: Illuminating the Unknown Unknowns

AI is reshaping the way we work and offers a compelling perspective on the four stages of competence: Unconscious Incompetence, Conscious Incompetence, Unconscious Competence, and Conscious Competence.?

The quadrant where AI makes the most significant impact is Unconscious Incompetence - the realm of unknown unknowns, or things we don't know we don't know. The beauty of AI lies in its ability to provide answers to unstructured questions, thereby illuminating dark areas of our understanding.

A typical example is a data analyst who, without AI, might be unaware of a novel correlation lurking in her dataset. With AI, an unstructured question such as "What patterns can be found in this data?" may reveal a previously undiscovered link, turning unconscious incompetence into conscious incompetence or even conscious competence.

In the domain of Conscious Incompetence, AI is no less valuable. Here, it acts as a tool for 'just in time' learning. Our detailed questions or prompts guide the AI to provide information necessary to bridge our knowledge gaps. For instance, a novice programmer who knows they don't understand a particular coding language can ask an AI-powered learning platform for assistance, turning a complex programming concept into digestible modules. This process swiftly transitions the individual from conscious incompetence to conscious competence.

Surprisingly, AI is least useful in the quadrant of Conscious Competence, the realm of known knowns. Here, we know what we know and are capable of generating insights and new knowledge. AI, in contrast, lacks the subjective experience and intuition that allow humans to generate truly novel ideas. Instead, AI's role in this quadrant is to consolidate our knowledge, acting as a repository or resource for information we've already acquired.?

For instance, a seasoned architect consciously competent in design principles may not benefit significantly from AI's input for creating innovative designs. Here, AI serves to collate known concepts, maintaining a well-structured archive of design principles, historical trends, and previously successful architectural plans.?

It's important to remember that AI, as a tool, excels in amplifying human capability. Its impact on the quadrants of competence highlights the harmony that can exist between AI and human intelligence. By identifying and exploiting the unique strengths of both AI and human cognition, we can navigate the journey from unconscious incompetence to conscious competence more efficiently.

In summary, AI's role in the landscape of competence is multifaceted. It shines brightest in the realm of unconscious incompetence, where it can reveal the unknown unknowns. It plays an instrumental role in conscious incompetence, serving as a 'just in time' learning tool. And while its role in conscious competence might be less pronounced, AI remains valuable as a knowledge collator. Together, AI and human intelligence can push the boundaries of what we know and uncover what we don't - a synergy that will continue to evolve as AI advances.

Interesting insight! It is a summary of my conversations with chat GPT.?Doesn't add much to the subjects I am an expert at, but amazing at showing me the things I didn't know I didn't know.?
