The AI Tsunami: An Initial Perspective on Employment, Privacy & Power

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been making significant strides in recent years, and its impact on various industries is undeniable. From self-driving cars to virtual personal assistants, AI is revolutionizing the way we live and work. However, with this rapid advancement comes a great deal of uncertainty and concern. Concern about an impending "AI tsunami" that could have a profound impact on society as a whole should be something we all find time to discuss and debate sooner rather than later. The recent release of ChatGPT and its rapid adoption puts this topic front and center, and a major investment by Microsoft in OpenAI only further validates the platform and will accelerate further development.

The impact is going to come quickly and will be incredibly pervasive.

There are a number of topics that should be discussed, and they should be inclusive of not just the technical, but also ethical and moral implications. While the topics can be debated on each of their individual merits, I believe that the harder and more important conversation will take a holistic approach as all of them are so closely intertwined.?

One of the most pressing concerns is the impact of AI on employment. As machines and algorithms become increasingly sophisticated, they are able to perform tasks that were previously done by humans. This has led to fears that automation will lead to widespread unemployment, particularly in industries such as manufacturing, transportation, and customer service. Furthermore, there is a concern that the jobs that are created by AI will require advanced technical skills, which many employees currently lack. This could exacerbate existing social and economic inequalities.

As machines become increasingly capable of performing tasks that were once the exclusive domain of humans, many jobs may be automated, leading to significant changes in the labor market. While some experts predict that this will lead to increased productivity and economic growth as noted in “A Step in the Evolution of Human-Machine Relationships,” others warn that it could also lead to widespread unemployment and inequality.

Another major concern is the impact of AI on privacy and security. With the increasing use of AI in areas such as national security, finance, and healthcare, AI systems will be able to collect and process vast amounts of data on individuals and organizations. This raises important questions about who owns and controls this data, and how it is used. The use of AI in decision making could have significant implications on civil liberties and could lead to bias and discrimination. This data can be used for targeted advertising, surveillance, or even malicious purposes. ?There is also a fear that AI systems could be hacked or manipulated to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Fears also abound in regard to the way the increasing use of AI in critical infrastructure, such as transportation and energy, could lead to security breaches that could have devastating consequences. These are just a few examples of the many privacy and security issues that must be considered as AI continues to advance.

The impact of AI on the balance of power between individuals, organizations, and nations is also alarming. The concentration of AI resources and expertise in a small number of countries and companies could lead to imbalances in economic power, military capabilities, and political influence, which could have far-reaching consequences for global stability and security.?AI systems could be used to control and manipulate individuals, leading to a loss of autonomy and privacy, and an increasing use of AI in decision-making could lead to biases and inequalities that exacerbate existing power imbalances.

To mitigate these risks and maximize the benefits of AI, it will be essential to develop new policies, regulations, and international agreements that address these challenges. This will require close collaboration between governments, businesses, and civil society, as well as ongoing dialogue and engagement with the public.

Moreover, it’s crucial to ensure that the development of AI is guided by ethical principles like Microsoft’s Responsible AI framework, to protect human rights, and ensure that the benefits of AI are shared widely. This can be done by creating a regulatory framework for AI, that establishes guidelines for the development, use, and governance of AI systems. It's important to promote public awareness and education about AI to help people understand its potential impact and how to navigate it.

In conclusion, the rapid advancement of AI is bringing about a new era of technological disruption that has the potential to change the way we live and work in ways we can't yet imagine. As we navigate this "AI tsunami," it is crucial that we take the necessary steps to mitigate its negative impacts on society and ensure that the benefits are shared widely. By working together, we can direct the future of AI in a way that is safe, equitable, and beneficial for all.

Thanks for sharing this article and your viewpoints to be considered. There is so much to think about and like with anything that is unknown, there is fear. I feel both excited and scared as hell about this type of technology and do believe it will be vital as this "tsunami" hits that we gain more awareness around benefits and risks associated.

Philip Magnuszewski Thanks for sharing Phil. We are at the precipice of a societal changing event starting with ChatGPT but rapidly expanding Generative AI landscape and applications. With the democratization of these capabilities upon us, there will indeed be good and bad actors.

AI is a powerful tool for productivity, engagement, gaming, as well as (ironically) social interaction. There is definitely a lot of "good" to be realized by embracing and leveraging AI, but there is definitely a need to find the new balance of good, ethical AI vs. disruptive AI. Where will the market be able to support shifts in skillset, employment, etc. Great article Phil, definitely thought provoking.
