AI - trop de choix tue le choix

The back end of 2022 brought us the revelation of #gamechanging #technology in the shape of #chatgpt. Since then (4 months give or take), the AC (After ChatGPT) era, has seen us living in hyperspeed mode for #techdevelopment.

As Allie K. Miller highlights in this post, #ai is already so diverse in its purpose, applications and uses but this is only the beginnings of the revolution.

Futurepedia is showing that it has currently, nearly 2000 tools listed with 26 added today, an indication that startups and #tech companies continue the race to have their AI product be 'the one' or at least 'one of the ones'.

Dominating things at the moment sees some hyping #autoGPT as the end of ChatGPT while others are pointing to differences in it's capabilities and the skills needed in the #ui:

with AI chatbots, a lot relies on the users’ ability to come up with the prompts that the chatbot will respond to. This is set to change with Auto-GPT, a new application that allows AI to act autonomously.

While there are incredible possibilities with AutoGPT and I concur that the need to #prompt as we know it with ChatGPT is a temporary state that will further evolve dramatically, there is a place for both of these technologies and rightly so.

I can also see so much worth in the #microGPT market. The idea of having customisable, small scale, bespoke #LLMs that work within your domain, your organisation, has got to be a winner. Although, not truly examples of these micro products, Class gives us the idea of where this is heading for education.

But, we have to keep our eyes open to a reality: In order to bring the masses along with those in the know and those who invest time experimenting, discussing and sharing, we have to keep returning to the basics. There are a significant numbers of people who are lost with all this. Some haven't even started. I recently joined a Facebook user group for ChatGPT after being invited and although this is just for Australian teachers, it has nearly 7000 members. All seem to be educators and a lot seem to be either right at the start of accessing ChatGPT or at least in the early stages of trying to figure out how to get it to work it's magic.

As the title of this post says, 'trop de choix tue le choix' - 'too much choice kills the choice'. I don't wholeheartedly agree with that for myself but it highlights that there is a risk in not harnessing the power of #educators to make a difference in their practice rather than letting #edtech companies do that for us. By all means #explore and #experiment but don't forget to bring all comers on for the ride and make the #tools accessible for all to share their wonder moments.
