This edition brings you updates from the OpenAI DevDay and GitHub Universe events, highlighting significant AI breakthroughs and their wide-ranging impacts. We also discuss Bill Gates' forecast of a revolution in AI-assisted computing within the next few years. Additionally, our focus extends to current research exploring AI vulnerabilities and the growing ethical dilemmas, especially in the music industry, underlining the necessity of responsible AI innovation and application.
OpenAI DevDay
The future of artificial intelligence was on full display at OpenAI's annual DevDay event last week. Thousands gathered, both online and in-person, for a glimpse into the innovative projects and tools OpenAI has been developing over the past year.
The star of the show was the unveiling of GPT-4 Turbo, the next iteration of OpenAI’s groundbreaking language model. With upgraded performance, scalability, and affordability, GPT-4 Turbo represents a major leap forward in AI’s natural language capabilities. Developers also got a sneak peek at the new Assistants API, which facilitates building customized AI agents for specific tasks and interactions.
OpenAI flexed its strengths in multimodal AI as well, announcing full integration of DALL-E 3, its state-of-the-art image generator. Attendees witnessed firsthand how DALL-E 3 can conjure incredibly diverse and high-fidelity images from text prompts.
Providing developers with both inspiration and reassurance, OpenAI also introduced Copyright Shield, an initiative to legally protect customers utilizing its products properly. Overall, the event highlighted OpenAI’s commitment to responsibly advancing AI that can benefit people and society. The enthusiastic reception signals a thriving future between developers and OpenAI’s revolutionary models.
AI Revolutionizes Software Development: GitHub Universe 2023 Highlights
In a groundbreaking keynote at GitHub Universe 2023, Thomas Dohmke introduced revolutionary advancements in AI for software development. Since 2020, GitHub has been at the forefront of this AI evolution, with its "Coding Oracle Paper" marking the start. The highlight is GitHub Copilot, an AI tool that's reshaping coding practices globally. Boasting a 55% increase in developer productivity, Copilot has been adopted by over 37,000 organizations. This year, GitHub unveiled Copilot Chat, integrating conversational AI assistance across various coding platforms, further embedding AI into every aspect of the developer workflow. These innovations not only enhance efficiency but also democratize software development, making it more accessible through natural language processing. GitHub's pioneering steps are setting new standards in technology and empowering developers worldwide.
GATES′ Notes
In his predictions about the future of software, Bill Gates highlighted the current limitations in today's applications. Despite improvements over the decades, he noted that software still requires explicit step-by-step instructions from users, lacking a comprehensive understanding of their work, life, and needs.
However, Gates foresees a major shift coming in the next five years with the emergence of AI-powered software agents. These agents will be able to understand natural language, engaging in nuanced conversations rather than simple commands. They will perform a wide variety of tasks, leveraging deep knowledge about the user's relationships, hobbies, schedule and preferences.
According to Gates, the transition to these AI agents will usher in the biggest revolution in computing since the shift from typing commands to using graphical interfaces and mouse clicks. It will transform how we interact with computers.
Unlike previous software assistants like Clippy, AI agents will feel far more human and personalized. They will act as digital assistants, capable of seamless conversations across both personal and professional contexts. This personalized assistance will be a game-changer, helping users in a myriad of activities based on an intimate understanding of their unique needs and goals.
In Gates' view, this next era of computing will be defined by software that goes beyond rigid programs to intelligent agents that truly understand us.

In a recent AI news report, it was highlighted that Lilian Weng's article on "Adversarial Attacks on LLMs" discusses the complexities and methods of attacking large language models like ChatGPT. Key points include:
AI Investment
Microsoft has announced an update to its Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub program, aiming to support startups amidst an AI chip shortage by offering free access to Azure's "supercomputing" resources. This initiative includes a no-cost Azure AI infrastructure option, featuring high-end Nvidia-based GPU virtual machine clusters for training and running generative models, akin to large language models like ChatGPT.
The program starts with Y Combinator startups, selected due to their early-stage focus. Microsoft aims to prioritize the needs of Y Combinator's current cohort and alumni to foster innovation. Additionally, Microsoft is collaborating with M12, its venture fund, to broaden access and plans to partner with more startup investors and accelerators, reducing barriers for startups in training and running AI models.
This offering is positioned as unique in the AI ecosystem, targeting early-stage startups and providing them with Azure credits to run AI workloads. However, the access to these resources will be time-bound, intended for testing and trialing rather than continuous operations.
FLOWGPT VS Bad Bunny
Bad Bunny's fans were shocked this week when the Puerto Rican superstar went on an angry tirade against a new viral TikTok song that mimicked his voice using artificial intelligence.
The track "NostalgIA" racked up hundreds of thousands of views by using AI to generate eerily accurate recreations of Bad Bunny, Justin Bieber, and Daddy Yankee's vocals. It was posted by a mysterious user named flowgptmusic, though no direct link to the AI platform FlowGPT has been established.
In a profanity-filled post on his WhatsApp channel with 19 million followers, Bad Bunny lashed out at fans who enjoyed the fake song. He declared that anyone who liked "NostalgIA" should immediately leave his chat group and that they don't "deserve to be my friends." He even said he didn't want such fans attending his upcoming tour.
The outrage from the Latin superstar, whose monthly Spotify listeners exceed 83 million, sparked waves through his widespread fanbase. It also left many wondering if this is just the beginning of a broader backlash against AI-generated content from the music industry.
Bad Bunny has not given any further statements on the matter. Reps for Justin Bieber and Daddy Yankee also have not commented publicly. But one thing is clear - the ethics of using AI to imitate real artists without consent has struck a nerve with Bad Bunny and potentially other stars worried about losing control of their art.
