AI is Transforming the 2022 World Cup

As you probably know, the 2022 FIFA World Cup has reached the semifinals, it is a global phenomenon with over 5 billion viewers world-wide and over 1.2 million spectators attending in person in Qatar.

For many years, soccer referees made critical game decisions based on their subjective perspective of the game. Sometimes their calls are questionable and controversial, for example Maradona's "The hand of God” goal in the 1986 World Cup Quarter Finals.

That has all changed in the 2022 World Cup with the introduction of AI instant replay, which provides a 3D model of the entire game in real-time. The technology applied to this game is incredible. Let’s start with the most high tech ball ever. A sensor in the ball relays the exact position of the ball on the field 500 times a second.

FIFA is doing motion capture on the players in real time without the use of funny suites with reflective balls. Twelve motion-tracking cameras mounted under the roof of the stadium use machine learning to track 29 points in players’ bodies, 50 times per second, calculating the exact position of all limbs and extremities.

An AI system integrates all this data to create an objective perspective on the game, providing alerts when violations occur such as when players are offside, the ball is out of bounds, etc. In addition, producing an immediate 3D replay of the event that demonstrates why the call was made to both the audience and the referees. Thereby eliminating “bad” calls and taking the game to a whole new level.

Similarly, active investing has been mostly a human endeavor, where managers made investment decision based on their subjective perspective of the markets. Unfortunately, investment managers are no different from soccer referees, they make mistakes and, as a result, overall active fund managers have underperformed their benchmark indices and their performance has been inconsistent.
