Is AI a Threat to Your Job?

Today I read an article in The Wall Street Journal by Ray A. Smith, titled "AI Is Starting to Threaten White-Collar Jobs. Few Industries Are Immune." The article points out that AI uses in corporate environments are advancing rapidly, and may replace jobs up and down the ladder. My first reaction upon reading the headline was to say AI is an opportunity as well as a threat. And that led me to consider using a SWOT analysis for career planning.

SWOT analyses are common in corporate strategic planning exercises, using a four-box approach like this.

A SWOT analysis for career planning can help identify Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats to your professional development and career goals. Here's how you can structure a career SWOT analysis:

Strengths

  1. Skills and Expertise: Identify the skills, knowledge, and expertise you possess that make you valuable in your field.
  2. Education and Qualifications: List your educational background, certifications, and qualifications that set you apart.
  3. Personal Attributes: Consider your personal qualities such as leadership abilities, communication skills, and adaptability.
  4. Professional Network: Assess the strength of your professional network and connections within your industry.
  5. Accomplishments: Reflect on your past achievements and successes in your career.
  6. Passions and Interests: Recognize the areas of work that you are passionate about and excel in.

Weaknesses

  1. Skills Gap: Identify areas where you lack skills or expertise compared to the requirements of your desired career path.
  2. Limited Experience: Consider any gaps in your work experience that may hinder your career progression.
  3. Education or Training Deficiencies: Acknowledge any areas where your education or training may be lacking.
  4. Weak Personal Attributes: Reflect on personal traits that may hinder your professional growth, such as difficulty in public speaking or time management issues.
  5. Lack of Network: Evaluate whether you need to expand your professional network to advance in your career.
  6. Procrastination or Lack of Motivation: Consider any habits or tendencies that may impede your career growth.

Opportunities

  1. Industry Trends: Identify emerging trends, technologies, or changes in your industry that you can leverage for career advancement.
  2. Networking Events and Conferences: Explore opportunities to attend industry events, conferences, and workshops to expand your network and knowledge.
  3. Further Education or Training: Consider pursuing additional education, certifications, or training programs to enhance your skills and qualifications.
  4. Promotion or Advancement: Assess potential opportunities for promotion or advancement within your current organization or elsewhere.
  5. Market Demand: Identify areas within your field where there is high demand for professionals with your skills and expertise.
  6. Mentorship or Coaching: Seek mentorship or coaching opportunities from experienced professionals in your industry.

Threats

  1. Competition: Consider the level of competition within your field and how it may impact your career prospects.
  2. Technological Changes: Recognize how advancements in technology may disrupt or change the nature of your work.
  3. Economic Instability: Evaluate how economic fluctuations or industry downturns could affect your career stability.
  4. Globalization: Consider how globalization and outsourcing may impact job opportunities within your field.
  5. Workplace Dynamics: Assess potential threats related to workplace politics, conflicts, or toxic environments.
  6. Changing Job Market: Recognize how changes in the job market, including outsourcing or automation, may affect your career prospects.

Once completed, the SWOT analysis can be used to develop strategies to maximize strengths, address weaknesses, capitalize on opportunities, and mitigate threats to achieve career goals.

This is excellent Randy! A great way to periodically assess where you are and where you want to go. I recently spoke at a conference and shared the following scenario to a group of accountants. Imagine you have a peer and you’re about equal. Six months from now, what if that peer is doing more work, better work, more advanced work, and is continually taking on new assignments because she is gaining capacity? You can’t compete. THAT is the impact of AI. That progress is happening all around us. All of us need to consider how we adapt to that situation. It’s an exciting time to take your career into your own hands!
