AI Takes Over eBay's Cybersecurity

eBay announced earlier this week the acquisition of 3PM Shield, a company that provides AI-based marketplace compliance solutions. eBay claims that the acquisition will make policy compliance easier for sellers while also keeping eBay a trusted marketplace.

The purchase price was not disclosed. The technology of 3PM Shield will aid in the prevention of the sale of counterfeit items, unsafe products, and illegal goods. So, what exactly is 3PM, and how does this cutting-edge technology work???

According to their website, 3PM Solutions' cloud-based platform provides solutions that assist manufacturers, retailers, and brands in resolving complex revenue-related problems. Their computer vision and state-of-the-art NLP automatically removes counterfeits at scale. The technology has advanced to the point where it can now analyze 160 million customer reviews from over 2 million sellers in less than 4 hours. It can also retrieve relevant brand data in seconds from over 1 billion listings.

Despite the fact that each analytical case is unique, the platform "spins up virtual machine clusters" in Google Compute Engine to index its listing tables, making it much easier to search for unstructured data. The company can then use the information gathered - a seller's track record, customer reviews, and so on - to determine whether or not a seller is fraudulent. They can then contact an online marketplace to have the seller removed. According to the company, Google Cloud services like Cloud Bigtable and Dataproc have enabled them to aggregate, organize, and analyze unstructured data at scale.

3PM Solutions also employs a variety of image recognition solutions to help spot counterfeit items.?The Cloud Vision API compares images posted by third-party sellers to licensed images from brands. If there is a problem, 3PM can report image misuse to the marketplace. They also intend to use the open-source machine learning framework TensorFlow to direct customers to brand-approved sellers.

The company says that?growth has been abundant, with a 600% increase in new customers over the last full fiscal year.
