The Olympic AI Agenda

The Olympic (AI) Agenda is a strategic document from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) aimed at exploring and harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in the world of sports. This agenda, presented under the leadership of IOC President Thomas Bach, succeeds the Olympic Agenda 2020+5, which was launched in March 2021.

According to Bach, the goal is to drive the use of (AI) to enhance athletic performance and the athlete experience, make sports more accessible worldwide through new technologies, use (AI) to optimize resources and reduce the environmental impact of sporting events, while ensuring that the use of (AI) in sports is fair, transparent, and respectful of human values.

Some of the main points of the agenda include:

  • Governance Framework: Establishes a system to oversee and manage the use of?AI in sports, ensuring it is done ethically and responsibly.
  • Global Collaboration: Invites all parties involved in the Olympic movement (athletes, federations, etc.) to join in this effort and leverage the opportunities offered by AI.
  • Future Focus: Recognizes that (AI) can revolutionize various aspects of sports, from training to event organization.
  • Priorities:? Focuses on global accessibility of sports, sustainability, and resilience, all aligned with Olympic values.
  • Experience-Based: Developed with the collaboration of (AI) experts, athletes, and representatives from technology companies.

AI Impact of AI on the Olympics

Understanding the objectives of the Olympic AI Agenda, we aim to answer the question of whether AI can make a unique difference in these Olympics by analyzing the key (AI) implementations that will be featured in the Olympic gala.

AI to improve safeguarding:

The IOC is developing an AI system to protect athletes from online abuse. This system monitors social media in real time to detect threats and remove abusive messages before athletes even see them. This initiative is part of a broader approach to ensure the safety and well-being of athletes during the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The system not only aims to help the (IOC) protect athletes from online abuse but also assists the (IOC) to better understand the challenges athletes face regarding such cyberattacks. This enhanced understanding will enable the (IOC) to improve athlete protection in future events further.

Different methods in which (AI) will safeguard the safety of athletes at the Olympic Games

  • Monitor social media platforms in real-time to detect abusive messages

The (AI) system will constantly scan social media platforms for abusive messages directed towards athletes.

  • Flag identified threats for action by social media platforms

Once harmful content is identified, the system will flag it for the corresponding social media platform to take action.

  • Help the IOC understand the challenges athletes face regarding online abuse

By monitoring online conversations, the (AI) will provide the (IOC) with valuable insights into the nature and extent of online abuse faced by athletes.

  • Contribute to developing future strategies to address online abuse

The data collected by the (AI) system will inform the development of future strategies to combat online abuse and create a safer online environment for athletes.

In recent times, terrorist attacks in France have been constant. Therefore, AI-equipped security cameras will play an important role in safeguarding athletes by assisting security officials in monitoring and identifying potential security risks, such as abandoned bags in public spaces or large crowd gatherings.

AI to Create High-Quality Videos

According to Ravindra Velhal, global content technology strategist and 8K lead in the Software and Advanced Technology Group at Intel, as explained in a report, these Olympic Games will be the world's first live demonstration of an end-to-end 8K VVC streaming experience.

He also mentioned that the process of streaming 8K content from Paris to anywhere in the world involves significant infrastructure challenges and complex implementation, including fifth-generation Intel Xeon CPUs for encoding Intel-based client CPUs and Arc GPUs for decoding.

The steps to achieve 8K broadcasts include:

  • Selected Olympic sites have broadcast-quality cameras that record live content in 8K at 60 frames per second with high dynamic range (HDR) at 48 Gbps data rate together with 32 audio channels.
  • Worldwide, PCs based on Intel? Core? i9 processors decode the (OBS) content in real-time before displaying the video stream on an 8K television protected by Intel's high-bandwidth digital content protection technology.

AI to Enhance User Experience

To ensure that viewers of the Olympic Games don’t miss the highlights, AI will use multiple cameras to create 3D videos, compile highlights in various languages, and automatically send them to users as summaries for easy viewing.

The Chinese company Alibaba will provide a record number of multicamera replay systems with high-quality AI-driven cloud reconstruction. This technology will create 3D models and additional viewpoint mapping in 21 sports and disciplines, allowing for more engaging replays from multiple camera angles.

With the use of this technology, viewers will be able to better understand sports, as AI will be able to represent complex athletic manoeuvres in graphics and numbers that make them easier to follow.

Digital Twins in Improving Logistics

Another implementation in these Olympic Games is the use of digital twins, which is a simulation system that uses real-time data streams to create a digital representation of a physical asset, aiming to enhance collaboration, information access, and decision-making.

The use of digital twins is not new in sports events, as for the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), an augmented reality application was implemented to showcase the capabilities of digital twins for enhancing the fan experience.

Digital twins are expected to enhance the delivery and experience of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, along with sustainability, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. Some of the objectives that digital twins should achieve in these Olympic Games are as follows:

  • Optimize the planning and execution of the Games: By providing access to the most up-to-date information on event planning and execution, and reducing planning overlaps.
  • Offer learning opportunities and support preparation exercises: By enabling client walkthroughs or orientation training before the venue is physically ready.
  • Use during event operations: As data repositories for security plans, client travel, and transportation plans.
  • Enhance the fan experience: As a form of entertainment, potentially serving as a metaverse.
  • Energy management system: Energy consumption in Paris 2024 will be monitored in real-time, and the captured data will be used to inform future planning.

AI to Analyse and Maximize Athlete Performance

With the support of AI-powered programs, coaches will be able to analyze athletes' performance during training and create personalized training plans. These programs will help assess injury risks, recommend exercises, and suggest activities for specific training sessions.

According to IOC President Thomas Bach, Intel has been chosen to develop the (AI) infrastructure that will enable the implementation of these cutting-edge technologies at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

With its expertise in implementing advanced technology, Intel among other technological partners of the Olympic Games will be a key player in ensuring that these pioneering innovations, set to be introduced at the Olympics, make a unique impact on the Games.

Navigating the Ethical Maze: AI in Sports

AI may lead to revolutionary advancements in sports, but it also raises substantial ethical issues. For instance, the use of AI in performance analysis may create unfair advantages, widening the disparity between wealthy, well-funded teams or countries and those without financial resources. Data on athletes’ biometric characteristics raises privacy issues as well. Although AI used in officiating decisions could help reduce human errors, some argue that it takes away from sports’ humanity.

Additionally, using AI to forecast outcomes or examine strategies might result in over-optimization which reduces unpredictability and excitement that attracts people to sports. As we begin to implement AI technology in the Olympic Games and beyond, we need to find a balance between technological advancement and preserving sports’ integrity, fairness, and human essence. In this regard, focusing on ethical aspects will be important to ensure that artificial intelligence adds value instead of compromising the values of sportsmanship and fair competition.
