Denmark's once-praised welfare state has become a "surveillance nightmare" thanks to its government's obsession with catching welfare fraudsters. 

Annika Jacobsen, head of the country's data mining unit, has tripled the number of databases her agency can access, gathering information on everything from people's taxes to their relationships. 

This allows the agency to develop machine learning models to predict who might cheat the system. Documents obtained by Lighthouse Reports reveal a potentially dangerous system where technology and political agendas have become entwined.
