AI Takeover vs. Human Potential

AI Takeover vs. Human Potential

Could AI genuinely outpace human potential, or do our unique qualities—like creativity, empathy, and adaptability—give us the advantage?

In our recent episode of Chew on This, our weekly show on Linkedin with Vlada Lotkina , we dived into the pros and cons of AI’s influence, exploring how automation could reshape industries, challenge our skills, and redefine what it means to be human in an AI-driven world. Here are the takeaways for you to chew on:

AI as the future of innovation

AI is already playing a transformative role in workforce development, especially through platforms that provide personalized learning and job-matching services. For example, platforms like Coursera and LinkedIn Learning use AI algorithms to recommend tailored learning paths to users based on their skillsets and career goals.

In recruitment, companies like HireVue utilize AI to analyze candidate interviews, evaluating traits such as communication skills and problem-solving abilities. These AI-driven solutions help organizations scale training and hiring processes while making them more efficient, ultimately aiding in the development of a more skilled workforce at a faster rate.

Another strong example comes from Walmart, which has employed AI for reskilling its workforce, particularly with the launch of its “Live Better U” program. This program provides access to education for its employees, focusing on in-demand skills to prepare them for future job roles. Walmart has partnered with institutions like Penn Foster and eCornell to offer both skilled trades and digital skills training, such as data fluency and UX/UI design. By leveraging AI, these educational programs are tailored to help workers adapt to the fast-evolving job market.

A major takeaway from this is that AI for personalized training is the key to workforce development.

The Power of Human-Centered Skills

However, there are clear examples where AI falls short, and human potential remains irreplaceable.

In leadership roles in particular, emotional intelligence and empathy are crucial, qualities AI cannot emulate.

Take, for instance, conflict resolution within organizations or leading during times of crisis. When COVID-19 hit, human leaders were pivotal in providing compassionate leadership, understanding employees' struggles, and making ethically complex decisions—something AI simply cannot do.

Leaders in companies like Patagonia and Airbnb demonstrated human-first decision-making by prioritizing employee well-being over immediate profits, offering flexible work arrangements and creating new support systems for their workforce.

In education, while AI-powered tools can offer personalized learning paths, the role of human educators in motivating, inspiring, and supporting students emotionally remains essential. For example, teachers in Finland have combined AI tools with human mentorship, ensuring that students not only gain knowledge but also develop creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking skills—attributes that AI alone cannot nurture.

This juxtaposition of AI in scaling workforce training and the irreplaceable human touch in leadership and emotional intelligence showcases that while AI can be a valuable tool, human potential in areas like empathy, ethics, and creativity remains vital. The future may be more about a partnership between AI and human strengths than a takeover.
