Will AI take my Job ?

Let's start with three historical examples to illustrate how technological advancements have changed job structures.

Example 1: Industrial Revolution (Late 18th to Early 19th Century)

  • The introduction of machinery in industries like textiles and manufacturing transformed production processes. Initially, there was concern that machines would replace human labor.
  • While some jobs were lost (e.g., hand-weaving), many new jobs were created (e.g., machine operators, maintenance workers).
  • The overall productivity of industries increased, leading to economic growth and the creation of new industries and job categories.

Example 2: The Advent of Computers (Mid 20th Century)

  • Computers automated many tasks previously done manually, such as calculations, data entry, and complex computations.
  • Jobs like typists and certain types of clerical work decreased.
  • New roles emerged in software development, IT support, system analysis, and cybersecurity.
  • Entirely new industries, such as the software and IT services industries, were born.

Example 3: The Internet Boom (1990s)

  • The proliferation of the internet revolutionized communication, commerce, and information sharing.
  • Traditional retail jobs faced challenges due to e-commerce.
  • New job categories emerged, including web development, digital marketing, e-commerce management, and IT infrastructure roles.
  • The internet also enabled the gig economy, creating opportunities for freelance and remote work.

The Impact of AI on Jobs

AI is an advanced technology that will increase the world's #productivity, meaning we will collectively achieve things faster with respect to time. This also means we will free up time to do other things, and a new work structure will be created.

This new work will be distributed to the world's workforce, which is divided into a high-value (high-cost) and low-value (low-cost) structure, depending on the value of the output an individual contributes.

Therefore, AI or any advanced technology that the world discovers will never cut jobs; it will change jobs. Those who #adapt will always have jobs. Those who are slow to adapt may be out of a job for some time until the new job structure reaches equilibrium (which always has jobs for every willing individual) until a new advanced technology disrupts it again.

The cycle will go on.

Final Thoughts

  • History of Technology: From the Industrial Revolution to the Internet Boom, technology has transformed jobs but also created new ones.
  • AI's Impact: AI will increase productivity and change how we work, not eliminate jobs.
  • Adaptation is Key: Those who adapt and learn new skills will thrive; those slow to adapt may face temporary displacement.
  • New Opportunities: Each technological advancement has led to new industries and job roles.
  • Embrace Change: The cycle of job transformation will continue with AI, offering new opportunities for those ready to embrace change.

I hope this article gives confidence to those who feel AI may take their Job and encourages everyone to #adapt to stay relevant in the #changing job market.

Well, this is happening right in front of our eyes. AI has started slowly absorbing jobs in the information economy. It is possible to see larger implications in the near future. The best thing I believe we can do is to harness AI to supplement our capabilities and make sure that it is our 'secondary' source of creativity and knowledge. The primary should always be the human intelligence.

Yes. Instead of resistance, ignoring its impact and fear of losing jobs, we need a mindset on "How we can leverage the power of AI and make our lives better?" and opening new frontiers is the key for all such paradigm shifting times.

Yes it will, but that's where we must bring a different evolution of what we value add to the role.
