AI Supported Writing-Is it coming for our jobs?

If you’re like many people these days, you’ve explored ChatGPT and what its capabilities-as well as its limitations are. You may have even tried writing an article or an email for fun to see what it would say or suggest regarding language.

I’ll admit that I’ve spent my fair share of time recently using AI powered tools to explore and see if and how my own writing could potentially be augmented and maybe even benefit using AI. So, this morning as I was reading the news, I was struck by the language in the middle of an article that sounded exactly like something I’d seen in many responses that I’ve requested and seen provided though the use of AI recently. While I won’t cite the article or author and I have no way of proving that a tool such as ChatGPT was involved, I believe that it was.

Here's the language copied and pasted exactly as it is written in the article:

“These global layoffs do not only increase the level of unemployment in an economy but also a certain level of uncertainty. Unemployment is a massive problem in any country these layoffs only worsen the situation. Individuals being layoffs affect their personal life on many levels, even though the company provides them severance pay, it is still a huge financial loss on their family’s part.

?

Apart from this sudden layoffs also affects the remaining employees, as they might feel overworked, stressed and undervalued which might turn into decreased more and less motivation and productivity. Discontent on employees’ part may result in a decline in revenues for the organisation. The changes that have been brought about due to mass layoffs may also disrupt the company’s culture and might lead to employees questioning the stability of their jobs and the company’s future.

While accurate(ish), it's vague and general. The tone is different that the rest of the article. It felt like the author ran out of things to say and/or didn’t have or take the time to finish wiring. After reading the above, my immediate thought was “this was written by ChatGPT!” ?That thought came with a bit of a realization which was that I’m quite convinced that AI still has a way to go to displace me (and the use of my own brain) as a writer. What I’ve found though my own personal experimentation is that trying to use AI artificially (pun intended) and insert suggested language into something that you’re creating from scratch can make it sound like someone else copied and pasted sections into your own work. This is no different than 10 people contributing to a proposal and having whoever was responsible for writing come behind the team to massage it for overall agreement and to make sure it sounds like one voice instead of 10.

So, before you think AI is going to kill jobs and “take over,” remember that it’s intended use is to augment existing processes and not displace them. I mean, if I’m able to spot AI written text in the middle of an article…probably just about anyone can. It’s a tool to help our jobs and not destroy them. Use it as such…a tool that can augment and not solely as a ghost writer and I think you’ll begin to see the benefit that it offers the average user. To the headline above, I don’t personally think that AI is coming for our jobs, at least not for the foreseeable future. Embrace it, learn from it, collaborate with it. I think you may just find an unexpectedly positive collaboration. ?

P.S. No AI was used in the writing (at least the original content) of this article.?
