AI-song goes VIRAL! What are we going to do?

Have you heard the latest music news about Drake?

A song went viral on TikTok, and everyone was buzzing about it. It was racking up millions of views. But guess what? It's not actually by Drake or The Weeknd! None of them sang it. It was created using AI technology that replicated their voices, and someone (aka Ghostwriter977) produced the tracks without the artists' consent. What does this all mean?

Today, let’s chat about:

?? How AI is impacting our creativity

?? The future of monetising music

?? Interesting resources to level up your creativity

??The Impact of AI on Creativity

The recent buzz around AI-generated music has sparked a lot of discussion about technology's impact on artistic expression. While some see it as a game changer, others are worried about the potential loss of human creativity and originality.

Proponents of AI-generated music argue that it offers exciting new possibilities for creativity. It allows artists to experiment with new sounds and styles and can make music creation faster and more cost-effective. This could potentially democratise the music industry and make it more accessible to aspiring artists.

On the flip side, there are concerns that if AI-generated music becomes too prevalent, it could lead to a homogenisation of the music industry, with all songs sounding the same same.

??Still, let's think about the future of Artists’ Monetization

This opens a can of worms about who owns the voice rights. There are currently no clear guidelines for voice rights when it comes to AI-generated voices, which means that the voice of someone like Drake can be monetised and scaled without their consent. Warner Brothers, who manages Drake's intellectual property, quickly intervened and asked Spotify and TikTok to take down the AI-generated music.

The fact that the AI-generated music went viral shows that audiences are willing to embrace this new technology. On a side note: the artist, Ghostwriter977 who produced the viral AI-music, mentioned that he is getting pay jackshit for his creativity.

While Grimes tweets and says she will support AI-generated music by offering a 50% split of music royalties:

? What if: Blockchain was used to distribute the 50/50 split?

Grimes and an AI artist can use a blockchain contract to share the money earned from their music. Here are some more thoughts on how it would work:

  • The blockchain contract has rules on how much money each of them should get from the music sales. In this case, the rule is an even 50/50 split for each artist.
  • Every time someone buys or listens to the music, that information is recorded on the blockchain.
  • The contract automatically calculates how much money each should get based on the agreed rule.
  • The money is sent directly to their digital wallets, similar to online bank accounts for digital money.
  • Using the blockchain to distribute royalties is a fair and transparent way of paying both parties, as the amount of money earned is visible for everyone to see on the blockchain.

There’s no need for other companies to get involved, saving time and money for Grimes and the AI artist. Both artists win. There are downsides to using blockchain to distribute royalties, such as the potential for errors in programming or hacking.

This is a big what-if, I had a quick chat with a blockchain developer, and they mentioned that it's a cool idea. Super pricey to do, and we're still a long way off from making it happen. But a creator can also dream big.

Quick recap: As AI technology becomes more advanced and accessible, it will be essential to consider its impact on creativity and the music industry. It's offering new pathways to be creative. Thoughts? Comment below
