AI in Smartphones

Last week 三星电子 revealed that their newest model... The Galaxy S24 which will feature Google Gemini-powered AI features, including AI summarization and auto-translate over calls.

???Why you should care:

Many of our workforce have mobile devices to support them in their everyday roles and this is one of the first signs of true AI integration in smartphones, and we can expect this to catalyze a new era of smartphone innovation

With much of social care utilising Samsung products, AI will soon be at the fingertips of our teams. With it, I believe it will bring:

  1. Convenience: AI makes life more convenient by automating tasks and offering personalized recommendations, enhancing the user experience.
  2. Productivity: Efficiency improvements through automation can boost productivity and free up time for other activities.
  3. Safety: Enhanced security features powered by AI protect sensitive information on our devices.

???Key Points:

· The S24 will directly incorporate Gemini Pro (Google’s latest, and most advanced AI model), to enhance Samsung’s Notes, Voice Recorder, and Keyboard apps with features like improved summarization.

· Furthermore, Gemini Nano (a more compact and efficient model), introduces Magic Compose in Google Messages, and Google’s Imaghen 2 model will provide advanced photo editing capabilities directly into Samsung’s Gallery.

· The Galaxy S24 is the second Android device, after Google's Pixel 8 Pro, to use Gemini Nano, although Samsung will be among the first to test Gemini Ultra—the most advanced Gemini model.

· Another feature mentioned by the Samsung team is an auto-translate feature for calls which uses AI to detect foreign languages and translate them to your desired language.

While Apple has been dodging the term, Samsung explicitly and repeatedly referred to the S24 as an AI phone and highlighted a host of new AI-powered features:

· Circle to Search is a new feature whereby you can circle anything on your phone, like a product or a place, and the AI on the phone will find it for you.

· Live Translate lets you have live conversations in multiple languages. In a video demo, an English-speaking person converses with a Korean speaker as the phone translates both languages in real-time.

· An AI-powered camera that delivers better image quality and up to 100x zoom.

· Generative Edit lets you edit pictures and use AI to remove people and objects from photos.

· Transcript Assist helps you transcribe, translate, and summarize voice memos, while Chat Assist helps you craft the right tone for messages.

Google’s trying to make waves with Gemini, a new generative AI platform that recently made its big debut. But while Gemini appears to be promising in a few aspects, it’s falling short in others. So what is Gemini? How can you use it? And how does it stack up to the competition?

AI has been in mobile phones for a number of years, without us realising and has bought many advantages:

1. Enhanced User Experience: AI tailors the smartphone experience to individual users, making devices more intuitive and user-friendly.

2. Improved Efficiency: Automation of tasks through AI saves users time and effort. AI can schedule meetings, set alarms, and even make online purchases on your behalf.

3. Enhanced Security: AI-powered capabilities such as facial recognition and fingerprint scanning fortify the security of mobile phones, guaranteeing the safeguarding of sensitive data. Additionally, AI-powered Chatbots play a pivotal role in enhancing user interactions and automating tasks for a seamless experience.

4. Advanced Photography: AI advancements in mobile phone cameras make it easier for both amateur and professional photographers to capture stunning images.

Unfortunately like everything, there are also cons, and these include:

  1. Privacy Concerns: AI collects data on user behaviour, raising valid privacy concerns. Users must trust companies to handle their data responsibly.
  2. Dependency: There's a risk of becoming overly dependent on AI, potentially affecting our problem-solving abilities.
  3. Job Displacement: The continued advancement of AI raises concerns about job displacement in industries heavily reliant on manual labour.

AI in Social Care

I recently co-hosted a conversation about AI in social care, alongside Adam Purnell FIHSCM???? , with guests Sonia Rai - HR Queen Bee , Jack White and Michelle Corrigan .

Regardless of the sector you work in, this conversation really gave food for thought of what companies need to consider before AI is integrated into their services.

Final Thoughts

I thought I would ask AI about what it thinks is the future of AI in mobile phones, and it told me:

The future of AI in mobile phones is expected to involve advancements in personalisation, enhanced user experiences, and increased efficiency. Mobile devices will likely integrate more sophisticated AI algorithms to understand user preferences, anticipate needs, and provide context-aware services. Features like AI-powered virtual assistants, improved image recognition, and real-time language translation are likely to become more prevalent. Additionally, AI is expected to play a crucial role in optimising battery life, enhancing security through biometric authentication, and enabling more immersive augmented reality experiences on mobile devices. As technology continues to evolve, AI in mobile phones is anticipated to contribute to a more seamless and intelligent interaction between users and their devices.

Whatever you think, AI is here to stay and will soon be in our hands more than ever before
