Look who's booming in the job market! The number of AI jobs advertised in May 2023 did a little victory dance and showed off a 19% increase compared to those pre-pandemic days of May 2019. After reaching its peak in November and December 2022, the level of AI vacancies is now settling at a new cozy high level.

Our labor market experts suspect that the trends around ChatGPT etc. played a significant role in this. Many companies wanted to ramp up with hiring AI experts as quickly as the descend of said rollercoaster. Moreover, folks who are familiar with new technological developments will also be in demand in the future. But don't worry, we don't all have to become developers now. "We need to invest in three different skill areas:

  1. We all need to learn how to apply AI solutions to enhance our productivity, creativity, and problem-solving capabilities. We need to learn how artificial intelligence can supplement our human intelligence to create a powerful “augmented intelligence”. In combination with automated processes this can help us to reduce the labor shortage in many different areas.
  2. We need to deliberately strengthen our social skills such as empathy, intuition and showing appreciation. These human skills will differentiate us sustainably from technology.
  3. Ethical thinking and acting is one of the most important skills in the age of AI.

We all need to invest in these three skill areas to be shapers of a livable and prosperous future with AI."

Prof. Dr. Yasmin Wei? is author and a renowned professor at the Nuremberg Institute of Technology with research focus on the future of work and how artificial intelligence affects jobs and skill needs.
