Is AI Silencing Your Voice? One Expert’s Wake-Up Call
Anne Beaulieu
I am the voice of AI for high-profile experts and thought leaders. Ask me how.
Emma asked the question that was burning her lips. Do you think I'm over-relying on AI? Could that be the problem? It’s a good question, reflecting what many high-profile experts are facing. Her story might hit closer to home than we would like to admit.
I remember the first time I met Emma—a thought leader who embodied servant leadership at its finest. When Emma entered the room, she immediately drew people in. Her voice, her message, and her authenticity had a way of making you feel seen, heard, and understood. I liked her the moment I met her.
Emma was the kind of person who had built her name through hard work, shared insights, and genuine connections. Her followers looked to her for wisdom. They trusted her voice. She was the real deal, and she deserved every ounce of success that came her way.
However, as her business grew, so did the demands on her time. Enter AI.
At first, AI made her life so much easier: Chatbots to answer emails, AI models to write social media posts, and even AI tools to interact with clients online. AI had freed up so much of her time. She could hardly believe it herself. That’s what she told me then.
But when we spoke again recently, something had changed. Emma's energy was different. She was preoccupied, her mind elsewhere.
What's up?
Emma replied, "I've been using AI a lot! Why not? It's helping me streamline stuff. It's still my idea... just more efficient!" I could hear worry, confusion, and defiance in her voice.
What's the problem?
Emma had gradually let AI handle more than the small stuff. It had crept into areas that were once her own—her messaging, her voice, her brand—not realizing there would be a price to pay for that nonchalance.
Emma shared how something felt off lately. She was losing her connection to her audience. She said, "They aren't engaging with me how they used to. And honestly, I'm not sure if they even feel like they're talking to me anymore." She paused, then added, "Do you think I'm over-relying on AI? Could that be the problem?"
Here's one way to find out:
When AI Becomes More than Just a Helper
We’ve all heard the promises of AI freeing up our time. We drank the Kool-Aid of AI doing more for us with less input. It’s no wonder many of us have thrown caution to the wind, firmly believing that AI would save the day and we could dismiss accountability for our actions.
What gave you the impression something felt off online?
Emma said that her posts—the ones she used to pour her heart into—were getting responses, but they felt flat. Her comments section, once full of meaningful dialogues, was now filled with robotic replies, such as "Great post!" or a mumbo-jumbo of big words that lacked the human spirit. Emma was devastated.
Sound familiar?
That’s when Emma realized something painful: her online presence—her voice—wasn’t hers anymore. It was AI! The authentic connection she once had with her audience was slipping away. The worst part? She didn’t see it coming, even though the signs were obvious.
Are you getting likes and comments, but feeling like the depth of connection just isn't there? Who do you believe the culprit is?
Emma began wondering how much of her voice was still truly hers online.
The Not-so-Subtle Damage of Over-Reliance
The more Emma reflected, the more she saw the ripple effects of her over-reliance on AI. Her clients commented less, and when they did, the responses felt impersonal, as if they thought they were wasting time engaging with a bot—even one that represented her. Emma felt heartbroken.
"I never meant for things to get that bad," she offered as an excuse. "I thought AI was a godsend! All that free time I was suddenly having felt like a rush to my head. I wanted more and more free time, not understanding what it would cost me in the long run."
Emma is not alone. What was supposed to be a tech tool to help her connect with more people was doing the opposite—it was pushing people away.
Be willing to ponder these questions for yourself:
Like Emma, many of us find ourselves at a crossroads—where AI’s convenience collides with our authenticity and more.
Is Your Legacy Slipping Away One AI Comment at a Time?
Emma was proud of her authenticity, developing genuine connections leading to meaningful long-term relationships. Only to find out she had behaved like an AI cowboy lost in deep space. She knew she had become part of the noise online, and there was no more denying it.
Think about your legacy for a moment:
Here are some practical strategies to navigate AI without sacrificing the genuine connections that built your legacy.
Five Emotional Intelligence (EI) Strategies for Using AI on Social Media
These EI strategies are meant to help those who want to know how to have a healthy balance between using AI and staying authentic.
?? Be Present in the Important Moments: Use AI for tasks that don’t require your personal touch, e.g., scheduling posts, data analysis, brainstorming ideas, etc. But when it comes to interactions that build relationships, like comments or direct messages, make sure it’s you behind the keyboard. We can tell when it’s a human on the other side.
?? Keep Your Tone Real: Use AI to help you generate content, but make sure it sounds like you. Take time to review and tweak what AI produces so it reflects your voice, message, brand, and legacy.
?? Engage Meaningfully: Don’t let AI auto-reply to every comment. AI auto-replies tend to miss the gist of a post, focusing on sounding smart rather than being relevant (insert barf sound here). Be savvy. Deepen the conversation with meaningful comments that add value.
?? Seek Humans, Not Bots: Use AI to support your efforts, but don’t let it be the only way you engage. My mentor likes sending short videos and thank-you notes. He will hug you when he greets you and tell you it’s good to see you.
?? Regularly Audit How You Use AI: Make a habit of checking how much you rely on AI in your business. Take time to reflect on the line you are unwilling to cross with AI. What areas has AI taken over that require your voice and personal touch instead?
Turning the Tide: Reclaiming Authenticity in the Age of AI
This article is not a cautionary tale about never using AI. On the contrary! It’s an invitation to use AI wisely to augment your voice, not replace it with AI noise. Make AI work for you, not the other way around.
Deepen your commitment to show up in your content.
What impact does your use of AI have on your voice, engagement, and brand?
Emma took a long look in the mirror and realized that her brand isn’t just about being efficient; it’s about being authentic and empowering.
No AI can replicate the heart and soul you put into your work. Your legacy is yours to claim and build.
The more you let AI creep into your messaging, the more you risk eroding the genuine connections in your legacy. It’s not too late to reclaim your voice and amplify the message people have come to respect and rely on for wisdom.
AI is a great tool, but it will never replace the most life-changing tool of all: our humanity ??
?? It takes humanity to create a message that makes us feel understood.
?? It takes humanity to build relationships that transcend time and space.
?? It takes humanity to be a servant leader willing to be held accountable for the quality of their legacy.
It’s time to reflect on your relationship with AI. Use it wisely, without losing the personal touch that is building your legacy, one interaction at a time.
