The AI ship that leads: 3 simple steps to succeed with leadership 5.0

The word “leadership” derives from an Old English word, ‘laedere’ – the one who leads, its noun ‘laedan’ – to guide or to bring forth. The root word of leadership is lead from the Anglo-Saxon Old English word loedan, the causal form of lithan– to travel. The first use of the word leadership dates to 1821 when leader was combined with ‘ship’ to elaborate the position of a leader.

Leadership 5.0 is a crucial factor in the success of AI and Digital Transformation initiatives. It is important for leaders to have a clear understanding of the technologies involved, establish clear business objectives, and create a culture of continuous learning.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can enhance the value of leadership by allowing leaders to perform less repetitive work and processes with low strategic impact.

Last February, Microsoft released the Bing ChatBot for AI. When you ask Bing AI fpr the general principles that can help companies achieve success in this area of AI & Digital Transformation, leaders come first:

  1. Understand the technologies involved: Leaders should have a clear understanding of the various AI technologies and their applications, strengths, and limitations.
  2. Establish clear business objectives: Companies should have clear objectives for using AI, such as improving existing products and services, making better decisions, creating new products, or optimizing business processes.
  3. Create a culture of continuous learning: Companies should invest in upskilling their workforce in digital technologies and artificial intelligence.
  4. Make decisions about talent and technology: Decisions about talent and technology will often determine the transformation’s success.
  5. Encourage experimentation: Companies should encourage experimentation with AI on a small scale to learn what works and what doesn’t.
  6. Be prepared to address strategy: Companies should be prepared to address strategy to implement AI, robots, and automation technologies

This opens up the possibility for leaders to learn to interpret AI insights to make better decisions . AI can also augment, improve, and ultimately replace human intelligence in many managerial functions, but it could never replace human leadership qualities that let people be creative and have different perspectives.

  6. Efficiency and productivity: Use digital technologies to increase efficiency and productivity by speeding up processes and streamlining operations.
  7. Resiliency: Build resiliency into your digital operations to be able to quickly adapt to changing circumstances.
  8. ROI: Ensure that your digital transformation efforts deliver a positive return on investment.
  9. Competitive advantage: Use digital transformation to gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
  10. Developing a digital mindset: Encourage employees to develop a digital mindset, where they are motivated to use their skills to create new opportunities.

Given the inspirational nature of leadership, the principle that leaders are readers is very true. Harry Truman once said, “Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers”. A leader who is a reader places a priority on learning. Learning takes time. For many in leadership, the crowded calendar has already squeezed out every available moment. So, a leader who is a reader is one who has made learning a priority and marked off time to read. Most great leaders are insatiable readers in constant pursuit of knowledge and personal development.
