Welcome to the marketing world of 2025, where the way people search online has drastically shifted. ChatGPT now commands twice the market share of Bing. Other AI engines like Google's SGE and Perplexity.ai are growing rapidly.
NOW is the time to optimize your content for AI-driven search. That is, if you want your website to be visible in this new world of AI search…
Here’s what you’ll learn today:
Understanding How AI Search vs. Google Search
Why settle for endless blue links? Why waste time sifting through ads? Why search the old way when AI search gives you something better? Instead of forcing you to piece together answers, AI search delivers them directly—synthesized, sourced, and ready when you need them.
Think about it. Would you rather solve a complex equation with a pen and paper or get the answer instantly with a calculator? AI search works the same way. Faster results. Fewer doubts. More confidence in what you find.
And when you use AI search, you don’t just get links—you get:
? Complete, well-rounded answers
? Verified citations from multiple sources
? A natural back-and-forth conversation
? Thoughtful follow-up suggestions
This isn’t search as you’ve known it. This isn’t a static list of results. This is an experience; dynamic, interactive, and built for the way you think.
Why does this matter?
Because when AI search pulls from your content, it doesn’t just list you. It features you. It weaves your insights into the answer itself. You’re no longer just another blue link in a sea of others surrounded by ads. You’re part of the conversation.
A Quick Example of AI Search vs. Traditional Search
Imagine someone searches: 'What are the key benefits of SEO?'
Traditional search engines such as Google and Bing might show you 3-5 ads, followed by ten blue links, then more ads.
AI engines compose summaries: 'SEO increases organic website traffic, builds brand credibility, and provides long-term marketing value. This information comes from Direction.com’s 2025 Generative Engine Optimization Report and Search Engine Journal’s SEO ROI Analysis.'?
And it links to those resources.
That's the new opportunity. And there is so much opportunity here to take a hold of.?
5 Key AI Search Platforms in 2025
We’ve seen a surge of AI search solutions. While many are from familiar tech giants, others are new players stepping into the spotlight.
1. ChatGPT
ChatGPT search takes a fresh approach to information gathering by producing AI-generated answers in a conversational format. When you ask a question, ChatGPT pulls from a wide range of knowledge it’s learned from its training.
Imagine talking to someone who has already read through countless sources, someone who understands your question and delivers a clear, thoughtful answer. That’s the experience ChatGPT creates. No shallow responses. No overwhelming technical jargon. Just easy-to-understand replies that make sense.
While some AI tools can end up with either overly shallow answers or a deluge of technical detail, ChatGPT provides easy-to-understand replies.?
ChatGPT’s knowledge reflects what it has processed at the time of training, which means it may not offer real-time references, but it’s definitely more up-to-date than Claude. Plus, you can use web crawler plugins to get information from more recently published articles and webpages.?
2. Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE)
Today Google generates artificial responses for one in five searches. Two conditions must be met: users must sign into a Google account, and browse in regular mode rather than incognito.
Many responses contained clear mistakes. Many headlines pointed out the flaws. Many users questioned its purpose. Many wondered why Google pushed forward with a feature none of us even requested.
For anyone looking for truth and accuracy, treat these generated answers as preliminary research guidance, not authoritative information.
3. Perplexity.ai
Perplexity is my personal favorite. I love the way it presents AI-generated summaries with real-time source links.
When you input a question, Perplexity scans across sites, articles, papers, and publications, gathering relevant details from multiple authoritative sources, linking each piece of information directly back to its origin, organizing complex concepts into clear segments, presenting nuanced answers with full transparency, and weaving everything together into natural, flowing dialogue that feels like talking with a friend.
What I personally love about Perplexity is its balance between depth and readability. It provides enough context to answer your question thoroughly while keeping responses clear and digestible with logos to the site references.
Something I've found particularly interesting is how it handles updates. Since it pulls information in real-time, having current, factual content with references to current information on your site increases your chances of being referenced.?
4. Bing Chat/Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft's Bing Chat, now known as Copilot, combines traditional search capabilities with AI-driven conversations. Where Bing once struggled to compete with Google's search market dominance, its AI integration has basically helped keep Bing alive.?
5. Anthropic's Claude?
As of today, with a knowledge base updated through April 2024 (yes, it’s not pulling live like other AI engines are), it maintains current insights while avoiding some common AI pitfalls.
Claude excels at parsing intricate subjects into understandable pieces without losing essential details.
The way Claude processes information differs from most other search engines. It looks beyond surface-level data to find connections between ideas and concepts.
When you ask Claude a question, it draws from its knowledge base to construct responses that consider multiple angles and perspectives.
I do like how Claude clarifies its knowledge cutoff date and acknowledges limitations. This transparency does set it apart from other AI platforms that are known for making inaccurate claims, also known as hallucinations.
Testing GPT Operator for Indexing in AI Search
AI search is evolving fast, and so are the strategies we use to get content indexed. One of the biggest questions I'm testing right now: Does using GPT Operator to scan our site’s pages increase their chances of appearing in GPT-driven search results?
It's interesting because AI engines don’t just crawl the web like traditional search engines. They prioritize structured, authoritative content they can easily interpret and integrate into responses. If GPT Operator actively processes and “reads” our pages, does that make them more likely to be referenced? We’re running live tests to find out.
So far, we’re experimenting with:
? Scanning different types of content (blog posts, research studies, product pages)
? Comparing indexed vs. non-indexed pages before and after using GPT Operator
? Tracking whether AI engines start pulling more citations from scanned pages
Early results? Promising. Some scanned pages are already appearing more frequently in AI-generated responses. But we’re digging deeper to understand whether it’s correlation or causation.
As AI search continues to evolve, finding ways to ensure your content gets read—and cited—by these systems is critical. We’ll update our findings as we refine our testing, but one thing is clear: actively helping AI engines discover and interpret your content could be a major competitive advantage in 2025.

4 Core Optimization Strategies for AI Search
Good SEO is good SEO, no matter how search evolves. And when it comes to AI-driven results, the best optimization strategies are still proving their worth.
I’ve put traditional strategies to the test, and the results are clear: strong SEO practices still work, and in many cases, they work even better in generative search.
Content structure, authority, and relevance all play a role, and each of these elements influences how AI selects and presents information. But beyond the basics, some strategies are rising to the top, specific tactics that AI search engines consistently prioritize and reward.
1. Content Structure and Format
Most AI engines thrive on structured data. Content structure and clarity win the day here. AI engines love content that's organized logically with clear headings, data tables, proper/clean site code, and schema.org markup.
They look for headings, bullet lists, and well-labeled sections. They also rely on tables, statistics, and quantitative points - all great things for user experience as well.?
2. Brand Trust Signals
AI engines don’t want random opinions. They prefer credible voices. They need to trust your content before they'll cite it. The more credible your site appears, the better.
That means referencing credible sources, sharing original research, and showcasing credentials.
When you provide recent statistics, academic-style citations, and links to recognized experts, you increase your authority. So, make sure you work on:
3. Building Links & Digital PR
Getting high-quality links to your website matters more than ever in 2025's AI search algorithms. Why? Because AI engines look for trusted sources to cite in their answers.
Think of links as digital votes of confidence. When respected websites link to your content, AI engines see you as more credible and reliable.
I noticed something interesting in our recent tests: Pages with links from major news outlets and industry publications showed up 3x more often in AI search responses compared to pages without such links.
Digital PR plays a crucial role here. When journalists and industry experts reference your research, data, or insights, you're not just getting traffic - you're building trust signals that AI engines value.
Proven approaches to getting great links:
Remember: One solid link from a respected publication often brings more value than dozens of random mentions. AI engines can tell the difference.
Pro tip: Look for opportunities to share genuine expertise rather than chasing quick wins. We recently helped a client publish an industry study that earned coverage from multiple major news sites. Those links led to a 20% increase in traffic from Perplexity within 1 week.
Keep building quality relationships and creating content worth linking to. In the world of AI search, as well as traditional Google search, your reputation really does matter.
4. Content Comprehensiveness
AI wants comprehensive information it can pull from. Think about covering topics from multiple angles.
For example, if you're writing about the best search engine optimization methods, don't just explain how to optimize content. Include:
Do that, and the AI engine might say, “This post from Direction.com covers everything from copywriting to link building.”
5. Questions and Answers
AI loves content that directly answers user questions. Create FAQ sections (wrapped in FAQ schema) that address common questions in your field. Here are some implementation tips and techniques I’ve found to work wonders:
Statistical Enhancement:
Citation Best Practices:
Natural Writing Style:
Real-world results we have with our clients back this up. Think of it like building a knowledge base that both humans and AI can easily understand. Each FAQ should flow naturally into the next, creating a complete picture of the topic.
I recently tested two versions of the same page. Version A had basic FAQ content. Version B included current statistics, expert quotes, and clear citations. The enhanced version B appeared in AI search results way more often.
Want to take it a step further? Track which questions AI engines pull from your FAQs most often. Use those insights to guide future content development. And don't forget - updating your FAQ sections with fresh data and insights keeps them relevant for both AI and human readers.
When you combine solid structure with valuable information and proper technical implementation, you create content that AI engines love to reference. Just make sure you're genuinely answering user questions, not just chasing AI visibility.
Track & Measure to Improve Success in AI Search
There are many different tools you can use to track users to your website. I love to use a tool called VisitorTracking, and Google Search Console, as they can show you exactly which AI platforms send traffic your way. Look for referrals from Perplexity, ChatGPT, and others in your source reports.
Check things such as:
I recently analyzed a client's analytics and found visitors from AI search spent 14% more time on the site compared to traditional search visitors. They also viewed almost twice as many pages per session.
Bing Webmaster Tools offers similar insights for traffic coming through Microsoft Copilot. Pay attention to which pages AI visitors land on most often to see what you may have on those pages that you don’t on others that you want to get found in AI searches.
Pro tip: Set up custom segments in Google Analytics to compare AI search visitors against other traffic sources. This helps you spot patterns in how they interact with your content.
When you spot pages performing well with AI traffic, examine what makes them special. Use those insights to improve other pages and posts on your site.
I personally like to check these metrics weekly, and optimize my content based on the data I’m seeing. AI search patterns change quickly, and regular monitoring helps you adapt your strategy.
