AI Safety Summit finishes. Tech changes in the King's Speech. Google to add the Tube to Street View.

What came from last week’s AI Safety Summit?

You may have seen in last week’s newsletter that the UK was playing host to the AI Safety Summit.

The summit saw the launch of the AI Safety Institute, which will test new types of AI before and after they launch.

The institute will be working closely with the Alan Turing Institute.

28 countries also signed the Bletchley Declaration, agreeing the “need to understand and collectively manage potential risks”.

The event hosted open discussions on topics such as the risk of losing control of AI, global safety, and integration with society.

The technology continues to develop at a rapid pace with this past week's research saying that AI is capable of insider trading and lying.

Tech news from the King’s Speech

The King’s Speech opens parliament and lays out the plans for government over the next year.

These are the pieces we’ve picked out from the announcements relevant to the world of tech.

The Automated Vehicles Bill moves forward – the act will make manufacturers responsible for autonomous driving crashes – not drivers. An interesting precedent to set with the rise of AI.

Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill – will lead to action taken to clamp down on the practice of fake reviews and remove unwanted subscriptions.

ChatGPT to cover copyright lawsuits

In an interesting move from OpenAI, the minds behind ChatGPT, they’ll now cover the cost of legal fees for copyright infringement.

The announcement came at their first showcase which evoked the style of Apple conferences of old.

CEO Sam Atman said: “We can defend our customers and pay the costs incurred if you face legal claims around copyright infringement and this applies both to ChatGPT Enterprise and the API.”

ChatGPT may infringe on copyright as it draws on a dataset that includes books and internet resources.

An important thing to consider when so many company staff now use ChatGPT as a tool in their everyday work.

Only time will tell if OpenAI will be left with a large bill from this decision. After all by drawing on multiple resources to generate a single response ChatGPT comes at the very least close to an original thought, inspired by separate sources.

At the conference, they also showcased an upcoming ChatGPT app store, where developers can sell their custom bots.

London Underground to go on Google Street View

Google are to start collecting images of the London Underground for Google Street View using a backpack-mounted camera.

The photos are to cover 30 of London’s most central tube stations and will blur the faces of people using them

While at first this might seem like a bit of a gimmick, it’s a useful addition to the service allowing tourists to check out their route before travelling and enabling people to research accessibility before travelling.

MySpace team took another shot in tech with PlaiDay.

The founders of MySpace have announced their latest project a text-to-video generator, PlaiDay.

PlaiDay is produced at Plai Labs, a web3-based social platform development start-up run by those behind MySpace.

There’s already a host of AI-based video production tools but PlaiDay adds an interesting twist.

By uploading a selfie into the system it changes the characters of a video to take on your likeness, amazing – yet scary stuff.
