Welcome to Different.?
The (experimental) LI newsletter for entrepreneurs, creators and marketing leaders with a Different mind.
Sponsored by Bad Tuna Industries.
????
On July 27th, 2023 about 300 super-smart, super-ding-dong AI people?got together at a high-end, entrepreneur positive, community-hub, workspace, in San Francisco to discuss the (very real) potential downsides to AI.
?
(AI: What could go wrong?)
?
They were invited by my buddy, legendary tech analyst R "Ray" Wang (Founder/ Chairman Constellation Research).?
?
Here are (just) a few thought provoking snippets:
?
“Exponential algorithmic biases.?
Even with large data sets, AI systems can make decisions that are systematically unfair to certain cohorts, groups of people, or scenarios.?
Some examples include reporting, selection, implicit, and group attribution bias.”
?
And…
?
“Reality distortion.??
AI will create misinformation and disinformation overload.?
The generation of exponential amounts of misinformation and disinformation continues the onslaught of a warped presence.?
This distortion field will hinder human judgment and obfuscate reality.”
?
And my personal favorite…
?
“AI overlords and authoritarianism
While the likelihood that a General AI could take over the world or society today, the rapid digitization of the physical world increases the possibility of an AI war.?
?
Large organizations with access to the insights of AI and the means to indirectly and directly influence behaviors will have to be combated by systems that protect individual freedoms and liberties by design….”
…
For all of the upside potential for AI, there is an equal and opposite downside potential.
Might be a good time to broaden our thinking and expand the dialogue?

Ralph Lauren Is Successful Because He Built A Brand. Right?
(Category Design is hard for many because it requires so much unlearning)
?
Ask any person on earth why Ralph Lauren was successful, and 99% of them will say the same thing:
“He built an incredible brand.”
?
But is that actually what?caused?his success? Or was the Ralph Lauren brand the result of his creating a DIFFERENT category?
?
As we wrote in our mini-book?The Big Brand Lie,?his success all started with his unique “wide” ties.
?
He designed the first tie to break the mold of what a tie should look like for men—and the first tie that even remotely resembled having its own distinct style.
Ralph’s ties were?different.
?
Marketing "experts" extol the value of “building a brand” as a path to success.
?
It’s as if sprinkling some kind of magic dust on your “brand” (changing the colors, the font, the logo design, etc.) is going to drive a breakthrough in growth.
?
Or, even worse, “Let’s use big, all-encompassing, undifferentiated language to make ourselves appeal to everyone.
?
Something like, ‘We are an authentic, purpose-driven brand.’”
I will live my (entire) life wondering how branding is a solution to a lack of differentiation?

Attention: All newsletters contain nuts ??
?Beware: The creator of this (experimental) LI newsletter:

?
Book reviewers on the internet have called his work:
“Very shallow”
“Incredibly mediocre”
“Easily one of the worst things I've had the displeasure of listening to.”
?
And one of the all-time greatest business book reviews:
“This book reads more like an MLM or cult brochure.”
?
There are (random) strategically placed spelling, grammar and formatting mistakes in this newsletter.

If you think Oprah controls “Big Pharma” so they can install chips in people’s heads to force them to lead their "best lives", then consider these strategic mistakes part of a secret code that unlocks Federal Government servers in Bumsquat Youdaho to the files that prove the Grand Canyon was made by Aliens. ?
?
If you’re not an Oprah control person, the errors herein exist because Lochhead is lazy… and wants to write in an unfettered, real(ish) time way and an editor would slow the roll.
?
Please.
Pretty please.

The stuff in this (experimental) newsletter that sounds nuts, ill-conceived &/or poorly written… I did that on my own.
(Probably after an IPA and a bourbon)
That said,

Most of the ideas, research, frameworks (and even big chunks of the writing) are as a direct result of (or completely lifted from) my partnership with Eddie Yoon & Katrina Kirsch ???? (aka Category Pirates)

... this is the part of Different, that is like the very end of a movie...
?….where some directors throw in crap-o-lla
(Did you know that Thomas Crapper - a British plumber popularized the modern toilet category? That's why we "take a crap". )
.....for their own entertainment purposes, because they assume by this point, people have left the theater...
?
...but for some reason you're still reading... and I'm still writing...
Everything is the way that it is, because somebody (like you) changed the way that it was.
