The AI Revolution In Education: Are We Ready?

Last Friday (24th January) was International Education Day 2025. We wanted to highlight the state of AI in education and what it means for our future.

The numbers speak for themselves.

While 2/3 of students in developed nations are already using AI tools for schoolwork, only 10% of schools have proper AI guidelines in place. This gap between adoption and governance should concern us all.

  • Teachers are increasingly using AI for lesson planning and assessment
  • School guidance systems are becoming AI-driven
  • Mobile phone restrictions in schools have jumped from 24% to 40% in just 18 months

But here's the reality check we need: 1 in 4 primary schools globally still don't have electricity, and 60% lack internet access. As UNESCO's Director-General Audrey Azoulay reminds us, AI must enhance, not replace, human learning.

The good news? Progress is happening:

  • UNESCO has released comprehensive AI guidelines for education
  • New competency frameworks for teachers and students are being implemented
  • Global ethical standards for AI in education are being established

What does this mean for educators and institutions?

The message is clear: we need to embrace AI while ensuring it serves teachers and students, not the other way around. This isn't just about adding technology – it's about thoughtful integration that preserves human agency in education.

What's your take on AI in education?

How is your institution handling this transition?
