An AI Research Institute based on lifelong learning and interdisciplinary research - a blueprint

An AI Research Institute based on lifelong learning and interdisciplinary research - a blueprint

Background

I have been developing this idea for some time.

With the launch of DeepSeek, More innovation from OpenAI and the trend towards AGI - I am accelerating this idea now

Traditional education with 4 year degrees , PhD etc is outdated - especially with AI

I want to create a new type of AI educational institution based on lifelong learning and interdisciplinary research.

The concept of lifelong learning takes on a different emphasis with AI

In AI the value is publishing and endorsement from AI peers matters. That’s why institutions like Oxford etc work i.e. it’s the people, the community and the feedback you get from the community that is valuable

I envisage a three year program (hybrid) where the goal is to publish 3 papers at an open level by an individual as primary author. The cohort consists of students who each participate in multiple papers for their peers. We focus on interdisciplinary research and lifelong learning for AI i.e. you could continue to participate.

In each case, the board / technical panel should approve i.e. the participant must present to the technical board

Initially, there are some specific focus areas we could have leverage - especially

1) vertical AI agents,

2) AGI and

3) AI reasoning

This list if not exhaustive

The Value

The main value is in

● A community of AI experts

● AI talent who will support

● Partnership network

● Success i.e. how our students succeed

Bringing back the values of traditional teaching to AI

When I talk about rethinking education - people take the view of automation. In contrast, I want to take the opposite - more traditional perspective.

For the past fifteen years, I have been involved in AI education, mainly at Oxford.

Historically, education was more personalised if you think of the Oxford tutorial system or the traditional Indian Gurukul system. And education was much more holistic - if you think of the term pastoral care in the secular sense.

Such traditional systems produced better outcomes due to their care and attention to the individual

Today, one of the challenges of education is that Its hard to tie education to outcomes. Ex you complete a four year course on a subject - and you often work in an area unconnected to that subject. We all know that this is common.

Emphasis and Motivations

There are some key motivations

1. Many people who are working in tech / AI do not get to really do research

2? Next decade of AI will be a huge boom with AGI

3) Emphasis on interdisciplinary AGI research

4) Chance to work with the best in AI

5) An emphasis on lifelong learning with AI

6) Spirit of community

7) A social cause for the community (I am very interested in making a difference)

8) Study as you work flexibly

9) Our plan is to start small and grow and launch our own journal

10) A hybrid model - based in UK and beyond

I shall share more as I develop it

Thank you Ajit Jaokar. Awesome initiative! Just my 2 cents.... I am not a professor, well maybe just an adjunct associate professor. I pride myself more as a AI renegade. In 2003, I completed my Ph.D. on applied machine learning - the use of bayesian learning methods for Soar agents (Alan Newell) to learn and decided that machines can never be smart. I spent the next 20 years studyding deep into pscyhology and touched philsophy because I was trying to get to the bottom of the concept of situated "abductive reasoning" (C.S. Peirce). Long story short, I fully support your effort. One of those ideas that came out while I was far away from engineering is that in the future, all education in tertriary education (maybe less professional degrees) leads to a Ph.D. There will be no more batchelors, nor masters. An idea of a team Ph.D. emerged as well. These ideas do not sound so absurd more today, I guess. For the future, education to me should swing fully towards developing knowledge creators in as short a time as possible. Why spend 16 + 4 years to reach a Ph.D. when it's highly probable that it can be done in 16? Thanks for sharing your thoughts! ??
