News reports suggest that the AI research community is divided over the direction of AI research, with some advocating for speed and others for caution. The group that supports speed believes, 'Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is expected to make our lives more efficient,' while others say AGI will lead to 'misuse, drastic accidents, and societal disruption, posing a threat to humanity.'
I see a third community that believes even if we research AI at the current pace, we will see a fully operational AGI after a decade or so, and the threats are not imminent.
If we delve deeper into this topic, can we observe a demographic trend? In general, can we speculate that Generation X and early millennials advocate slowing down the pace, while Generations Z and late millennials support continuing AI research at its full speed?
Are we taking enough precautions? Where do governments and politicians stand?
As an AI enthusiast, which stance will you support? What are your thoughts?
