Will AI replace human leaders?
Can you tell what she is feeling right now?
At Casehub we thought it would be interesting to experiment with emotion recognition software. So, I took a snapshot of one of our members during an online group session and put it to the test!
The software came to the conclusion she was:
74% neutral
22% happy
2.8 % sad
(the remainder of the results are too small to mention)
I thought: "Well, this is interesting!” The moment this photo was taken, during a Casehub session, I perceived quite a different mix of emotions to the AI software.
AI and machine learning are advancing fast. IT programs can process huge amounts of data in a very short time. Neural networks are trained to diagnose diseases, predict climate changes, drive cars, etc.
Artificial Intelligence can easily outperform human beings in specific, narrowly-focused, tasks. Also, more and more, simple and routine work is already handled efficiently by computers and robots.
Yet, AI is not as good with complex tasks such as understanding human beings.
Lots of human meaning is dependent on context and this is much more difficult to solve by algorithms. Neural networks can be trained to get better at it, but there is still quite a long way to go. Plus adding human emotions to the picture complicates it even more.
Leadership is understanding and influencing people. It’s the ability to lead people to their best performance. For this, a successful leader needs to be acutely aware of peoples' emotions, motivations, and relationships.
I believe that AI cannot replace leaders in the foreseeable future, but it will take over logic-based and administrative tasks.
Gartner has forecast that technology has the potential to replace up to 69% of leaders' work! As a result, the number of leadership positions will shrink and the expectations of leaders will change.
People-leading soft skills, which are outside of the capability of computers, will become more and more valued.
So, how do you avoid being made redundant as a leader?
