Social Media Downfall to AI Pitfalls: The Short-Sighted Revenue Trap

Saturday morning, I spent some time exploring OpenAI’s new ‘Explore’ feature, which is poised to become a store. I found myself as disappointed as I was when social media began exploiting users back in 2008 (or around that time), reminiscent of earlier shifts in the ‘Internet’ and printed press.

The role of AI in augmenting human creativity is crucial, especially in developing a more humane-centered technology. The problem with features such as GPT's Explore section and traditional social media is their emphasis on wonder and newness at the expense of substantial human enrichment. This approach appears to result in short-sighted revenue models that favor immediate profits over long-term and shared true value, and significant impact. The true value of AI lies in its ability to amplify, not replace, human creativity, offering new avenues for expression. This approach aligns to transform social media from a negative to a positive influence. The challenge lies in designing AI that deeply resonates with, and integrates human creativity and emotion, making technology a partner in creativity, not just an efficiency tool. This perspective is vital in ensuring AI development is centered on enhancing human well-being and creativity, and of course, coupled with an emphasis on risk visualization.

When browsing their new GPTs I saw that they had a sticker GPT. First, I tried but completely failed to impress myself, so I uploaded some of Lisa-Stina's art into what I think is DALL-E with a tweak. Learning how to prompt it to make "my" crab took me about one minute. I wanted it to be a bit dirtier hand-drawn ...

"My Artwork"?

In an ideal world, AI platforms would place a certificate-like icon by your avatar in the chat feed, reminding users about intellectual property rights. Imagine uploading content and seeing this icon, as if saying, "Careful now, you're not accidentally becoming the next Picasso!" It's quite the concept! While platforms protect legends like Picasso or Walt Disney, extending this to average creators might sound far-fetched. Fairness dictates that every artist deserves recognition, even unintentionally. However, we shouldn't overwhelm users with legal complexities. A simple nudge about rights and laws could help, but it's a lot to ask in a world where convenience often outweighs conscience.

All this plays in the same space as everything else that erodes our attention span. It erodes what being human means over time. At the same time, it's also human, we've been rolling our dice before. However, and in this context, these traits do not represent our best characteristics.

In conclusion, the journey with AI, much like our work with LiMNL, should always be steered towards enhancement, not replacement. We must continue to champion the development of technologies that expand our capabilities and enrich our experiences, rather than those that diminish our role or automate our unique human essence. By enhancing what makes us inherently human – creativity, emotion, and connection – we ensure that technology remains a valuable ally, amplifying our potential without eroding the core of our humanity.

Instead of doing things for us, AI innovators should focus on making tasks more challenging yet still manageable so that we can learn and grow. It's an expense game, and nobody likes cheating, and it feels good to be proud of our work. We don't want to be reduced to mere efficiency cogs in a machine. Let's hope that AI can assist us in more innovative ways than simply making things easier. OpenAI, it's time to step up your game and avoid becoming just another everyday and boring AppStore.

When building services, consider how AI and tech in general can nudge us towards cognitive enhancement, rather than mere efficiency. Think less in terms of steroids and more about the enriching experience of reading a book. How can we better integrate technology into our natural cycles of interacting with the world? When can we use tech to help us grow, perceive, and learn from our experiences with others? Navigating this territory as a technology company involves crafting services that provide immediate value while also offering sustained benefits over time.

It's not about building smarter AI; it's about creating a future where technology elevates, complements, and celebrates the human experience - this is important - never to replace but to enhance!

Questions to ask, not in solutions but in true value over time:

  • How can we ensure that AI catalyzes human creativity, rather than a crutch?
  • What role should ethics play in the development of AI that enhances rather than replaces human abilities?
  • How do we strike a balance between leveraging AI's potential and preserving our inherent human qualities? What are your thoughts on this delicate balance?
  • What other questions should we ask ourselves?

Your question: How can we ensure that AI catalyzes human creativity, rather than a crutch? I think the challenge is that most people are lazy and want to take a shortcut. AI will offer this opportunity to everyone, so we will have millions of shortcuts taken. Then there are those who actually want to strive for greatness, and AI can amplify their talents. But it's going to be a small percentage of people. The main question is, will the absolute tsunami of content from shortcut takers flood every forum so badly that the greatness gets lost in the noise?

...and in a way, I think businesses underestimate us, as if we're all about that 'easy button,' craving quick fixes and shortcuts to success. But hey, we're not that simple! Sure, we enjoy kicking back in the sun, sipping on cava, but only after we've found meaning, value, and purpose in life. So, here's a tip for businesses: Invest in what truly enhances our lives, and watch trust flow in ...
