AI for President? The Future of Governance in a Digital Age

Today on Tech Tales, I’d like to dive into a philosophical conversation that’s been on my mind lately, especially as we inch closer to the next presidential election. There's one concept I can’t seem to shake: will there come a day when AI runs for president? Before you dismiss this as a wild notion, let's take a moment to consider how far we've already come. AI has already held a leadership position, becoming the CEO of a Polish beverage company. Moreover, AI systems are steadily transforming jobs across industries, augmenting or even replacing human workers. According to a recent CNN article, 61% of large U.S. firms plan to incorporate AI into their operations within the next year, automating tasks once done by people.

Sure, most of these tasks are repetitive or administrative, and the AI "CEO" had limited power, but that’s not the point. As AI continues to evolve, consider the implications of an unbiased, non-political entity governing purely based on data and logic. Imagine an AI that’s not swayed by party allegiances, personal gain, or emotional biases—decisions based solely on what the data says is best for the people. As I think out loud, this could either be humanity's greatest achievement or its worst nightmare. But even with its potential for peril, I genuinely believe we’re heading toward this possibility.

Politics today feels more polarized and entrenched than ever before. Eventually, people might seek a return to normalcy, a reset that frees governance from political theatrics and ego-driven decisions. In such a scenario, AI—if advanced enough—might not only be suggested but could gain real traction as a viable option. If AI continues its trajectory toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), it’s not hard to imagine a future where it’s seriously considered, if not for the presidency itself, then certainly as a key advisor.

Just imagine the impact an AGI could have on the political landscape. With thousands of years of military strategy, political theory, and human history stored within its vast digital mind, an AI could redefine what it means to lead. It would have instant access to every policy document, every historical precedent, every meme, and every social trend. It could dissect issues in seconds and provide insights that even the sharpest human minds might miss. While full autonomy might still be far-fetched, having an AI as a trusted political advisor seems increasingly plausible.

Of course, all of this hinges on AGI’s continued development—and maybe even some synthetic skin for optics. But as we stand on the edge of this digital frontier, it's worth contemplating whether AI’s future role in leadership might be closer than we think.

Interesting possibility. I would think AI would have struggles with personality, which is what a lot of voters focus on. Who would I want to have a beer with? Was a question posed in elections past. I still think voters base their decision largely on the vibe they get from a candidate. What vibe would AI cultivate? My wife Aditi Nadkarni, PhD suggests a revamping of an election system where the candidates’ names are withheld and in place of campaigns are pure party platform proposals. So voters would choose a set of policies versus a candidate. AI could win in such a system, calculating what policies would drive voters to show up.

The idea of AI running for president is intriguing and could offer a data-driven, unbiased approach to governance. However, concerns about the lack of human empathy and the potential for inherited biases must be addressed.?As technology improves, we must weigh advancements against ethical considerations and human values.
