AI Predicts Patient Decline With Near-Perfect Accuracy Using Facial Expressions
A proprietary AI model has been developed and tested to predict patient decline based on facial expressions with near-perfect accuracy.
Often you can look at a person’s face, particularly those we know very well, and tell instantly that they are not feeling well, or something is not right. What if we could use machine learning to teach AI to recognize those kinds of facial expressions?
Turns out we can.
In a study recently published in Informatics, researchers found that they could use an AI tool to recognize facial expressions as indicators of health deterioration in patients with nearly 100% accuracy!
Their AI-driven model dubbed Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (ConvLSTM) was able to accurately predict health risks with an impressive 99.89% accuracy, which the researchers say could enhance early detection and improve patient outcomes in hospital settings.
The study’s proprietary ConvLSTM model was designed to detect specific facial expressions associated with patient deterioration. This model was trained and tested on a dataset generated from avatars, which simulated five facial expression classes. These expressions were crafted to represent a diverse range of facial landmarks, skin tones, and ethnicities, mimicking patients at risk of clinical decline.
The model's performance was evaluated using several key metrics. It achieved high accuracy (99.8%), precision (99.8%), and recall (99.8%), demonstrating the model's effectiveness in correctly identifying the relevant facial expressions.
The accuracy measures how often the model correctly predicts expressions, while precision and recall focus on the model's ability to correctly identify positive expressions without false alarms.
The ConvLSTM model proved superior to other methods that were also used. It excelled at recognizing patterns in facial expressions over time, which is crucial for accurately assessing patient conditions.
