AI Opportunities Action Plan: Ideas Into Reality

AI Opportunities Action Plan: Ideas Into Reality

Each country has its own playbook for artificial intelligence (AI). The U.K. just clarified its position, agreeing to take on 50 recommendations to make AI central to its growth strategy, improve daily life and secure a top spot in the global “AI race”.??

But what does this mean for industries and the work we do every day? How does this compare with other countries? And what is its impact on regulation? Here’s our take.?

What’s the AI Plan??

The AI Opportunities Action Plan details how AI will be used in the U.K. to drive growth and deliver efficient services and more jobs, with several major firms already investing in building the necessary AI infrastructure.??

The plan’s key points include:?

  • AI Growth Zones (AIGZ)” to accelerate AI infrastructure and encourage collaboration.?

  • National Data Library to unlock public sector data for AI research.??

  • AI Energy Council to seek clean and renewable energy solutions to power AI demand.?

  • AI skills and talent through scholarships, training and upskilling.?

  • Safe and ethical AI use with the right regulations.??

At its core, it will be about making AI work for people — from office workers to doctors to teachers.??

AI in Action: Real-World Wins?

The tangible benefits of combining AI with existing automation systems are gaining traction across all industries. We’re beginning to see a huge impact.?

Healthcare: More time for patient care?

AI and automation are helping the National Health Service (NHS) cut wait times, reduce admin work and improve patient experiences.??

For example, one Trust in northeast England saved over 40 hours of manual work by automating data collection for suspected cancer cases, giving staff more time to focus on creating personalized treatment plans and carrying out in-depth consultations. As AI advances, imagine what’s next: tracking treatment success or helping with predicting outcomes.?

Education: More teaching, less admin?

Educators can use AI and automation to handle time-consuming admin tasks, freeing them up to focus on students. The potential: personalized curriculums that adapt to each learner’s needs, making lessons more engaging and effective.??

That’s just the start. The takeaway? Many teams are already AI champions, pushing for change independently. This new action plan can amplify their efforts with more support, and clearer and more balanced safeguards.?

U.K. vs. the World?

Taking a broader view, the U.K.’s plan is ambitious: new infrastructure, new strategies, new resources. But it’s not the only one in the AI race:?

  • EU: The AI Act strongly emphasizes regulation and ethical AI use while also allowing space for innovation.??

  • United States: The U.S. recently rescinded Executive Order 14110, likely encouraging innovation and competition. They also just announced The Stargate Project, a $500 billion initiative to build AI infrastructure, create jobs and support the AI reindustrialization of the U.S.??

  • Australia: Yet to establish formal rules and frameworks for organizational AI use but lays out human-centered values.??

The U.K.’s approach balances innovation with governance — especially important as AI is introduced in more sensitive industries like healthcare.??

Regulation meets innovation?

While investment is vital, AI use still requires clear frameworks and accountability. Some agreed recommendations from the plan include:?

  • Growing the AI Safety Institute?

  • Requiring all regulators to publish how they have enabled AI innovation annually?

  • Investing significantly in the development of new assurance tools?

  • Building government-backed assurance tools?

The good news is that the technology itself can play a role in reducing the cost and complexity of governance. We’ve seen plenty of initial success where organizations build AI on top of automation. AI-driven tools can help flag anomalies and monitor systems, maintaining compliance more efficiently than relying solely on people to oversee it.??

Dr. Lou Bachenheimer, PhD , CTO Americas at SS&C Blue Prism, adds, “As the NHS use case highlights, the greatest returns are achieved when combining AI with automation technologies. AI incurs not insignificant cost and risk, so the goal is to mitigate these while optimizing the benefits. A simple approach is to empower AI with the ability to trigger rigorously governed automation workflows comprised of established, compliant technologies. If the AI is the brain, this gives it the hands-on-keyboards required to actually act, all while segregating the AI from sensitive data.”?

What’s Next??

The AI Opportunities Action Plan is just getting started, cementing that AI is not just a passing tech trend; rather, its influence is more important than ever.?

And while AI discussions often focus on the bigger picture, we shouldn’t forget the impact on everyday people —?shorter wait times, faster access to care, more personalized education and countless others.?

At SS&C Blue Prism, we’re already helping organizations make the most out of AI and automation — an effort we hope to see the AI Opportunities Action Plan further catalyze.?
