AI itself isn’t new. What’s new is the speed and sophistication with which probabilistic solutions converge, the vast depth of available source material, and the emergence of user-friendly interfaces. However, despite its growing capabilities, AI is not a sentinel. It cannot always be absolutely trusted to provide robust answers to every problem. Media narratives abound with both success stories and cautionary tales: from groundbreaking insights into DNA interactions to bizarre suggestions like eating "cow’s eggs" for health improvements.
There is no doubt that AI is a powerful tool—one that must be deployed with care and oversight. The old adage “garbage in, garbage out” is particularly relevant in AI. Without proper context, the data fed into AI systems cannot yield meaningful answers. Understanding and moderating AIs outputs requires both historical perspective and technical grasp. My own journey with AI dates back to the 1990s, when it was often referred to as neural networks. In this series, I’ll delve into the history of AI, the prerequisites for successful AI deployment, and its transformative potential for operations and compliance.
