AI: Ones to Watch

Given how early it is in the AI mega-trend, it's difficult to know where the chips may fall. But here are some companies that are already looking well-positioned to benefit ...

A mix of incumbents and emergents, the most common theme amongst them is their contribution to the personalisation that I believe AI will effect.

AI Squared

Building an on-ramp to the AI highway is likely a smart strategy (I would say this, since Cleverly is doing the same). AI Squared helps companies use their own data to build or enhance their competitive moat. It lets companies more easily adopt AI into their applications and begin to benefit from this technology.

Anthropic

AI is going to become the enabling technology for everyone's personal assistant. Remembering your preferences, how you like your information returned, your personal and financial situation etc. will mean that your AI agent acts in your best interests. Its current VA (Claude) is out and response is positive.

Cleerly

I mean, it's like Cleverly ... but with just one less letter, and that's reason enough to include it. But Cleerly is leading in another area where the benefits of AI will be huge - healthcare. Cleerly has mapped millions of hearts and its technology allows the creation of personalised health and treatment plans for the #1 killer.

Descartes Underwriting

Since we're talking about tackling big issues ... how about climate change? Descartes Underwriting is using AI to process data from satellites, radar, and other sources to identify and model climate trends.?But as a founder, I particularly like the commercial application, which is via improved underwriting. Unlikely to lead to lower premia but will be beneficial for DU.

Graphcore

It is going to be difficult to chase down leader NVIDIA, but Bristol-based Graphcore could be the company to do it. Graphcore develops and manufactures chips made specifically to accelerate artificial intelligence and machine learning tasks. It doesn't have the developer ecosystem of NVIDIA, but its partnerships with Big Tech may help bridge this gap.

Khan Academy

Well, we've done health and climate, so we can't leave out an education company. Khan Academy is doing truly astonishing things to incorporate AI (Khanmigo) into their delivery. From a virtual Gatsby with whom students can interact to reasoning and prompting rather than just delivering the answers. It's a real step forward in the pursuit of personalised education.

Midjourney

There was a beautiful irony to the concerns that AI would take over the most task-oriented jobs, and then the things that captured everyone's attention were the DALL-E Open Ai images that were created. Midjourney's images are exponentially better and when we think of how entertainment is going to be created to the individual (and the bank of content that must therefore be created on the fly), Midjourney looks to be the leader in this regard.

英伟达

Many people thought that the 'end' of crypto was a bit of a death knell for NVIDIA. But the company's lead in GPU chips, and cabling, and networking, and code frameworks etc. have put it in an almost unassailable position. That will change - see Graphcore above - but if for no other reason than its position in the centre of the AI boom, NVIDIA is a kingmaker.
