AI in Nonprofits: Insights from October Executive Round Table

AI in Nonprofits: Insights from October Executive Round Table

First things first, we have changed the name of our newsletter from AI for Good News to AI with a Mission. This name aligns more with our other service offerings.

On October 17, AI Consultants for Nonprofits hosted an executive round table discussion with nonprofit leaders. The discussion was centered on the three things nonprofit leaders must do to get ahead of AI adoption. Those three things are AI readiness assessments, training and strategic planning.

This session sparked additional conversations. Here's a quick run down.

  • A big part of our conversation was about AI readiness. It’s bigger than logging onto ChatGPT. You need to make sure your team is on the same page and your data isn’t a mess. AI will only amplify what you already have — so if things aren’t running well now, AI won’t magically fix it!
  • We discussed how AI can be intimidating, especially when people are worried about job security or data privacy. But, participants shared how that fear dissipates once people get some hands-on training.
  • We talked about a nonprofit that used AI to secure $200,000 in grants, mostly written with ChatGPT.
  • There was a good bit of conversation around the need for policies and ethical guidelines before diving in. Some organizations are still figuring this out, but it’s clear: if you’re using AI, you need a solid plan to manage things data security and fairness.
  • People are starting to see the bigger picture of what AI can do. We heard about nonprofits using AI to help manage chronic diseases in clinics, streamline HR processes, and even automate things like note-taking and reporting.

One major note was that there is still much education to be done around AI use cases for nonprofits. Some people don't get its benefit until they have an "a ha" moment.

Couldn’t make it? No problem!

We’re keeping the momentum going!
