AI Night Vision, Immortality, + Mind Reading
Hi Friends,
Let’s focus in on AI today (again, sorry - I understand if you need to unsubscribe). The advancements are on track to being ridiculous yet compelling, so we need to dive in. We will explore the new AI night vision, a tool immortalizing loved ones, and how AI can recreate things accurately by observing brain scans.
AI Night Vision
Researchers at Purdue University have developed HADAR (Heat-Assisted Detection and Ranging), a groundbreaking technology combining thermal imaging with machine learning, allowing AI-driven visual systems to interpret their surroundings in almost complete darkness as if it were daylight. By utilizing a unique algorithm called TeX, HADAR dissects thermal data into categories, effectively combatting the "ghosting effect" seen in traditional thermal imagery.
While the technology showcased significant potential in low-light scenarios, it comes with challenges. The system's current cost surpasses $1 million, and there are calls for enhancements to achieve faster processing speeds and wider adaptability, with ambitions to bring it to market within the next three years.
AI Immortality… Cool or Creepy?
Generative AI, notably popularized by ChatGPT, has rapidly transformed diverse areas, from academic writing assistance to aiding customer service interactions. This multifunctional technology is now being redirected into an unexpected domain: connecting with the departed. MindBank Ai, founded by Emil Jimenez, is at the forefront of this innovation.
By capturing a person's unique speech patterns, personality traits, and emotions, MindBank crafts digital twins, enabling loved ones to converse with a digital reflection of the deceased. Jimenez's inspiration stemmed from watching his young daughter bond with Siri and pondering the future of personal data.
He envisions these AI replicas not just as comfort tools for grieving but as avenues for deeper self-understanding and introspection. However, the ethical and psychological implications of such interactions remain points of contention, from the potential for inauthenticity to the very essence of human unpredictability and change.
(cheesy but made me laugh)

Ai Mindreading???
Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley have used artificial intelligence to decode and recreate the classic Pink Floyd song, 'Another Brick In The Wall, Part 1' using brain signals from epilepsy patients. This pioneering study, a first of its kind, previously had only seen attempts with speech and not music. The patients, undergoing treatment, had electrodes implanted which allowed scientists to capture a detailed account of their brain activity while they listened to the track.
The reconstruction, while resembling a version of the song as if "spoken underwater," still retained the iconic phrase "All in all it’s just another brick in the wall" and maintained its rhythms. This groundbreaking achievement, as reported in the journal PLOS Biology, indicates that brain signals can encapsulate musical elements of speech. Such insights pave the way for potential prosthetic devices that might restore natural speech rhythms and melodies for individuals with severe neurological impairments.
