AI Newsletter February Edition

January is a slow month - but not for AI. This year has already witnessed a flurry of AI breakthroughs, ranging from Amazon's new shopping assistants, capable of analysing thousands of reviews for informed shopping, to smartphones equipped with AI that can seamlessly translate multiple languages in real-time.

As I've expressed previously, if 2023 marked the dawn of AI, then 2024 is shaping up to be the year where AI truly comes into its own, moving from introductory phrases to widespread implementation. In this brief roundup, we'll dive into the exciting developments that have unfolded in the AI landscape during January 2024.

  • ChatGPT Will Evolve in Uncomfortable Ways
  • Galaxy S24 Series Launches With AI
  • Don’t Pay for ChatGPT-4
  • Mark Zuckerberg Talks Llama 3
  • Amazon Launches AI Shopping Assistant
  • Runway Announces Motion Brush
  • Abu Dhabi University Develops AI Tool That Can Replicate Your Handwriting?

“ChatGPT Will Evolve in Uncomfortable Ways”

In a recent Axios interview, OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman stated that “ChatGPT will have to evolve in uncomfortable ways.” But what does that actually mean??

Basically, Altman is referring to the evolution of ChatGPT which will focus on more customised and tailored experiences for individual users. This means that ChatGPT will be trained on data specific to individuals rather than relying solely on broad, generalised datasets.?

This personal data might include your emails, search history, calendars, etc., creating an AI model that is entirely personalised to you. However, this evolution of AI brings with it both opportunities and challenges, in that the AI interactions will be based on the individual's personal belief system and values, which could lead to ‘uncomfortable responses’.??

Galaxy S24 Series Launches With AI

Officially released on the 31st January, the Galaxy S24 series is integrated with artificial intelligence. It uses Google's Gemini Large Language Model (LLM) for certain AI features which are ?specifically designed to enhance the phone's performance and intelligence.?

Galaxy S24 is here

Automatic Language Translation

A standout feature of the Galaxy S24 is its ability to perform live, automatic language translations. This cutting-edge capability supports verbal and on-screen translations in real-time, handling up to 13 languages with ease. This feature also isn't confined to digital interactions alone; it's equally effective in person, breaking down language barriers in real-world conversations.

AI Image Editing?

The Galaxy S24 integration extends to the camera's editing software, transforming it into a tool that feels like 'Photoshop for kids'. This intuitive, user-friendly interface allows users to easily remove certain objects from images, fill in backgrounds and it will even suggest edits for images.?

Galaxy AI Features Won’t Always Be Free

For those contemplating the purchase of the new Galaxy S24, it's important to know that Samsung has announced that the Galaxy AI features, a major selling point of the device, will transition to a paid service after 2025.?

This strategic decision plays on the principle of - it's harder to relinquish a service once you've grown accustomed to its benefits. This move not only highlights the value and sophistication of the AI capabilities but also serves as a reminder of the potential cost implications in the future, once AI has become the norm.?

Don’t Pay for ChatGPT-4

You can now access ChatGPT-4 for free through Microsoft Co-Pilot. This service utilises the advanced capabilities of ChatGPT-4, meaning you get the exact same functionality that you would with the paid version, which typically comes with a monthly fee of around $20/£18.?

Mark Zuckerberg Talks Llama 3

Mark Zuckerberg recently took to Instagram to announce Llama 3, the next generation of Meta's large language model (LLM). While details are still emerging, here's what we know about Llama 3 and its potential connection to the metaverse:

What is Llama 3?

  • Llama 3 aims to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI), meaning the ability to understand and reason across many different tasks, similar to a human.
  • It is trained on a massive dataset of text and code, allowing it to generate text, translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer your questions in an informative way.

Open-Sourcing Everything:

  • A key aspect of Zuckerberg's vision is open-sourcing Llama 3. This means making the code and underlying technology publicly available, allowing anyone to contribute and build upon it.
  • This approach, while uncommon in the AI industry, aims to accelerate development and foster collaboration, potentially leading to faster progress towards AGI.

Tying AI with the Metaverse:

  • Zuckerberg sees AI as crucial to building the metaverse, a virtual world where people can interact, work, and play.
  • LLMs like Llama 3 could power virtual assistants, generate realistic characters, translate languages in real-time, and personalise experiences within the metaverse.

Many details about Llama 3, like its specific capabilities, release date, and open-sourcing terms, are yet to be revealed. So, we await further information from Meta to understand the full potential and implications of this ambitious project.

Amazon Launches AI Shopping Assistant

Amazon has recently unveiled a Generative AI tool aimed at elevating the shopping experience. This innovative tool intelligently sifts through Amazon's extensive library of product reviews to deliver precise and informative answers to customer inquiries about products. By leveraging the rich insights found in actual customer feedback, this tool ensures more informed and satisfying purchase decisions.

For instance, if you're curious about the final colour of a particular paint once it dries, this AI tool can assist. It sifts through existing customer reviews, extracting relevant information to provide a precise answer to your question. This means the AI tool actively searches and analyses the descriptions, experiences, and feedback from previous buyers to deliver accurate and helpful insights about products.

Runway Announces Motion Brush

The video editing software, Runway, has recently announced the Motion Brush. Which empowers anyone to animate images with ease. Simply "paint" the areas you want to move, choosing from presets like swirling, flowing, or bouncing, or even create custom paths. AI seamlessly blends your strokes, ensuring natural and realistic motion, with no artistic expertise required.

Advanced AI fuels Motion Brush's magic. It analyses your image and surroundings, intelligently filling details and generating animations that complement the original artwork. You can easily export your creations as GIFs, videos, or even interactive experiences, sharing your animated story with the world.

Abu Dhabi University Develops AI Tool That Can Replicate Your Handwriting?

Abu Dhabi University (ADU) have created an AI tool capable of replicating your handwriting with uncanny accuracy. This tool, trained on just a few paragraphs of your written text, can produce near-perfect forgeries, raising both intrigue and concern about its potential applications and ethical implications.

While the tool's potential applications are vast, ADU researchers are understandably cautious about its uses, and have made the decision to delay its release. This responsible approach highlights the crucial conversation surrounding AI development and its ethical implications. As with any powerful technology, careful consideration must be given to potential misuse and safeguards implemented before widespread adoption.

Final Thoughts

The beginning of 2024 has set a remarkable pace for AI advancements, signalling a year that's not just about unveiling new technologies, but about embedding AI more deeply and broadly into our daily lives and work.?

From the integration of AI in consumer products like the Galaxy S24 to the transformative potential of tools like Amazon's AI shopping assistant and Meta's Llama 3, we are witnessing a shift from conceptual AI to practical, impactful applications.

As we continue through 2024, the trajectory of AI's evolution will undoubtedly shape not just technology, but the way we interact, work, and create. The journey ahead is as promising as it is challenging, and it is one we must approach with both enthusiasm and caution.?
